Hi everyone,

I have a feeling someone has asked this question in the past but I didn’t take much notice of replies because I didn’t have an iPhone.

However, I have a friend who has been given an iPhone (a present) but is not on 02. Rather than take out a contract with 02, is there any legal way of enabling her to use her existing sim card in the iPhone?

Many thanks, in anticipation…

no. But it's not illegal to jailbreak it, I don't think. It just
might cause problems.

She will need to run QuickPWN to unlock the phone then it should be ok -
http://www.quickpwn.com/

It does depend though on what iPhone she has and what her existing sim
is capable of. For example the first gen iPhones won't be able to use a
3 sim and the new 3g iPhones won't accept non 3g capable sim cards.
She'll also need a decent data plan with her existing contract to take
full advantage of the iPhone.

Is it true this bricks previous versions on quickpwn?
If so not a problem I guess just need to run this first!

This has happened here too. It's really annoying and there is no way to prevent the download, as far as I can see in preferences.
Because we are using Macs I don't think it's an issue just bin the stuff.
But it is a surprise that a download can begin without any other action than navigating to a web page.

unless you actually install them then you should be fine. The best thing to do is to change your main account to a simple user account but set up an admin account for installing software. This will stop them getting control of your system. Also make sure that your firewall is on.

I'm curious about how you got to this point -- was it a
particular site? just wondering what to avoid...

this is why Safari now by default does not post-process (open)
files you download, btw. but Camino may still be set to do that.

Can someone please walk me through those to processes?

1. change account to simple user account
2. be sure firewall is on

Haven't a clue...

but I didn't open them. Put them in trash. And when a Camino logo-ed window
popped up and I clicked on cancel it would download. I couldn't close Camino, but
I at least had the presence of mind to force quit.

I think I was Googling some sort of vintage thingy...maybe even Craigslist. Something
like that

System Prefs/Accounts/. Find the + at the bottom (you might need
to click on padlock first) and create an account -- look for
checkbox to 'allow user to administer this user'.

When you have an admin user account, I think it lets you uncheck
that box for YOUR account. Henceforth when you get a box to put
in your password you will have to use the admin user name not
your own, and the password for that account. But it's more secure.

I THINK this all applies to 10.3.9...

are you using a router or direct modem connection?

Jason asked did my HISTORY show when the malware popped up.

YES. Genius. Listed the Google sites and then showed the Malware link.

Here is the last Google site I went into listed that as I was surfing it the Malware came up.

I am only reproducing the site link off the GOOGLE page. It was while in it that the misadventure occured.

WARNING: Malware virus scam somewhere in this link.

Okay first of all create an admin account

open preferences

then accounts

then on the right will be a list of all accounts. If you only have one it will be an admin account.

Go to the bottom to open the padlock, enter the user password.

Then click on the + to add an account. I call mine admin to make it easy

Enter a password for that account. It can be anything even the same as the one you are currently using. So you will have two accounts with the same password so you do not confuse yourself. One is an admin account and the other is a user account. You work in the user account so if anything does get on it only affects that one account, and does not get admin status.

Then check the box that "Allow user to administer this computer"

Once you have that set up do the reverse for your main account,

basically uncheck the "Allow user to administer this computer" box

You might want to then change the login items so that Automatic login disabled

When you have finished you should click the padlock to lock the changes

test that you are happy with the changes.

Also change the preferences in the browser to not auto run anything that is a real open door policy so you need to close it.

usually these are on by default with a built-in firewall, unless
you turned them off. there should be info on this one on the web
or that came with the router on setting the firewall...
