I keep receiving the suggestion that I should update to Big Sur (I am on Catalina). What is everyone’s experience of Big Sur? Any negatives?

Well, Gilly I wish I hadn’t done it. It has caused problems with the program I use a lot (Scrivener) thank you for your email because it reminded me that I have booked a call with AppleCare at 5.15 to try to sort out the problems. Virginia

Thank you for your quick response, Virginia. That's it. I'll steer clear of Big Sur for the time being.

That’s disappointing and curious Virginia. My partner has used Scrivener for at least five years (he’s not sure) and is currently running Big Sur. I asked if he’d had any problems - “No” he says and he uses it most days. So, I would ask two things:

1) What kind of problems are you having or with which part of the app are you having problems?

2) Have you contacted Scrivener (https://www.literatureandlatte.com/learn-and-support)? I’m sure they would be very helpful as a small company.

Regards,

Stephen

I’ve just written to them. The problem is that when I select to copy and paste the text isn’t highlighted. The other problem , which Apple care sorted out was the page was not fitting the screen in all programs not just Scrivener. They took me into safe mode and then back into ordinary mode and that sorted it out.

Hmmm.

My partner has just highlighted some text in Scrivener and it’s definitely noticeable from the other side of the room!

Is it only a Scrivener issue or does it happen in all apps?

No.  It highlights fine in TextEdit and Pages.  I think probably I’ve got to delete and reload Scrivener.  But looking at their website it is not clear how to download it again.  I’ve asked them a) can they fix the problem b) how to download program from their site without paying again.

Deleting the Scrivener app is less likely to fix the issue than deleting any preference/Cache files. Try looking in your home folder > Library > Preferences > move the com.literatureandlatte.scrivener3.plist file to the Desktop and reopen Scrivener. See if that helps.

Also try in Home > Library > Application Support > move the Scrivener folder to the desktop and reopen Scrivener.

You can also download the app here : https://www.literatureandlatte.com/scrivener/download to make sure you have the latest version

Well, Sam.  I have fallen at the first hurdle.  I cannot find Scrivener or LiteratureandLatte under Library- Preferences or under Application Support.  Am I looking in the wrong place?  I went to Finder - Virginia’s MacBookPro - Macintosh HD - Library - Preferences.

The Library folder is in your home folder. Click the Go menu > Home > then the View menu > Show as list > Show view options > tick ‘show library’

The library at the top level of Macintosh HD is global across all users, there’d nothing specific to your user in there.

Thanks for your help, Sam.  It has taken me until today to follow your instructions because I am scared of tinkering with the computer.  This may sound strange to you, but for me it is like looking under the bonnet of the car.
I moved the com.plist files from Finder to desktop. This did not solve the problem.  So I followed Scrivener support’s advice on how to delete and reinstall Scrivener. Unfortunately that hasn’t solved the problem either.

What is very strange is that I had to copy and paste the code they sent me by email before downloading the program, this was highlighted in blue as normal.  Hurrah, I thought, it is sorted.  But when I opened the program and opened recent project - no highlight when I select to copy.

Sorted!  I cannot believe it.  Following this advice from Scrivener support, the colour has come back.

Hi Virginia,

I'm sorry that didn't work. I'm wondering if perhaps you have the text selection colour set to the same colour as the background of the main editor. I'd like you to please go to Scrivener > Preferences > Appearance and select "Main Editor" from the menu. Select the "Colors" tab, then the "Text Selection" option. Is the colour swatch the same colour as your Editor background? And even if it's not, could you try changing the colour anyway to something that would definitely be visible over your editor background colour? Does the highlight reappear when you do this?

Best,
Alex
