I like to keep a clear inbox, so as they come in, reply quickly, or file them in specific folders to reply to later. These folders are Google labels in essence, but appear in Mail as folders.

But, in doing so, I lose the thread feature, which leaves for a cluttered folder.

If I setup a smart mailbox, eg. To Action, could I move things into it, thus removing them from the Inbox but remaining in the Smart Mailbox until I replied and deleted?

Any help, advice, or better ideas gratefully received as I've never used this Mail feature....

Thanks so much

Adam

You can't move anything into a smart mailbox as it is populated by the conditions you give it such as "All emails from fr...@mac.com". The thread feature works in a smart mailbox but as I don't use Google mail I'm not sure how they fit into the scheme of things.

I have several catch all mailboxes into which I move my emails and then use smart mailboxes to show me unread emails this week, emails today, emails from certain people or in a certain address book groups or combinations thereof - it's very flexible. If you are running Lion then both kinds of mailboxes can be dropped into the toolbar and you can just drag emails into standard mailboxes to file them which is very handy for frequently used mailboxes.

Regards,

Stephen

Thanks Stephen... and if I set up such a folder, do you know how it works over IMAP?

I mean, if it's in my inbox, I can also see it in GMail in my browser.

If I set up a local folder on my Mac, move a message to it from my inbox, is it still there in GMail in my browser?

Do you know?

Hi Adam,

I have a mac.com address (via iCloud which is IMAP)  and moving an email from my Inbox into my Mac's local folder will remove it from the server - so I suppose that is what Gmail will do too. This is true whether I move it manually or have a local rule on my iMac move the message.

There are others here with far more detailed knowledge than I who may have more to add ... ;)
