Hi Smuggers -

Excitingly, I have ordered a new iPhone SE. It’s arriving on Tuesday. I’m swapping it for my iPhone 6S, which is returning to Apple for recycling.

Re. resetting my iPhone to factory settings, is there anything to be aware of? I’ll be backing up to iCloud & my MBP.

I have a stupid question. When I swap my SIM card to the new phone, does it matter if my data has been wiped from iPhone6?

Hope you are all well and safe! 🌈

Best wishes
Catherine

Best way of migrating these days is direct from phone to phone via WiFi, as long as both iPhones are on iOS later that 12.4.1 (I think).

Switch the new one on and follow the migration instructions, the old phone should recognise there’s a new phone and offer migration as an option onscreen.

You can also back up the old phone to iTunes via USB, or in Finder on Catalina, just make sure to encrypt the backup and it’ll migrate over your passwords.

Thank you, Sam!

That’s reassuring. I know it’s usually straightforward. I just needed to check that I’d definitely be wiping my iPhone 6.

It’s very exciting to be having a new phone, especially for those of us with small hands!

Best wishes

I’d wipe the 6 a few days after migrating, just to be sure nothing’s missing

Thank you, Sam!

It hadn’t occurred to me to wait a few days, but will do.

As it happens, the sparkly new SE has just arrived, a day early.

So off to explore & today’s backup of my 6. Watch this space!

Best wishes

Hi Smuggers & Sam -

Reporting back on  the transfer between my 6 & my SE. It was very easy, so am now happily using my new phone.

After I’d sorted everything out, I noticed the new phone was black, not the white I’d ordered. Have contacted Apple for an exchange, so will be doing sim swapping when it arrives.

Thank you, Sam!
Best wishes

Keep in mind you’ll need to migrate to the replacement SE as well. Thankfully it’s an easy process these days.

My cunning  plan has been  to do it from SE to SE. It was like a thing of beauty, watching the transfer yesterday. A very elegant design!

Filming a pattern on the screen of the old phone from the new one is a genius move. It must’ve been fun encoding an encryption key in moving dots like that
