Good morning,

Is there a way of connecting a USB C MacBook to an Apple 27 inch display? Is there an adaptor? I’ve looked on Apple’s site but I couldn’t find anything.

Regards
Philippe

Is the 27” display DVI or mini DIsplayPort?

Hi Sam,

As far as I can tell it’s a Thunderbolt port. I’m attaching a photo.

I tried the apple T3 to T2 Adapter on my Apple 27inch LED Cinema Display (for my new Mac Mini last year) and it did not work.

The product page on the Apple website "https://tinyurl.com/y9glzpgn” states:

"Note: This adapter does not support DisplayPort displays like the Apple LED Cinema Display or third-party DisplayPort and Mini DisplayPort displays. For more information, visit the Apple Support page for the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter."

Here’s another Apple page about the problem. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207266

In the end I needed to buy a “Thunderbolt 3 Dock” from OWC. Their UK website is here https://tinyurl.com/y9qb6mh5  The multitude of ports it provides are always useful.

I guess it depends which monitor you have, my plugs are the same as in your picture. My 27” LED Cinema Display is wonderful, must be 10 years old, never a problem. (I have a new Samsung 4K display beside it)

Good luck.

Was that for the LED cinema display or the Apple Thunderbolt Display? Perhaps with it being Thunderbolt 2 it’ll work, or maybe the DisplayPort signal isn’t carried over by the 3-2 adapter?

It was for a 27” LED Cinema Display using mini DVI. (Rather than Thunderbolt 2.)

The Apple pages referenced below seem to explain the limitations quite well.

Hi Paul,

I got hold of a T2 -> T3 dongle and everything seems to be working perfectly! The only downer if that the display isn’t retina but I can live with that. My display only has a Thunderbolt 2 plug.

Thanks

Philippe
