Vertical bars etc.

Hi everyone,  my iMac from 2010 core i3 3.06GHz has suddenly got seven vertical bars and I tried and failed to download OS X from Apple support.    I get message  " no packages were eligible for install contact software manufacturer."  So the computer is unusable at moment.  Looking on internet it looks like graphics card is faulty.  Can these be repaired by heat treatment on solder?  I mostly want to get all the photographs on hard drive to transfer to my newer model iMac.  I'm not very good with tech things. .  Many thanks Howard Johnson

Sounds like either a dodgy graphics card or LCD display, I might have spare parts to resurrect it.

You can reboot holding T on the keyboard to go into target disk mode, then use FireWire/Thunderbolt to connect to another Mac (FireWire to thunderbolt adapters are available).

Alternatively if you don’t want to repair it, you can take the drive out and put it in a 3.5” usb enclosure to connect directly to your other Mac.

To add to the other comments, if you have another monitor, it may well work with that attached. Is this the whole screen or part of it?
