Good morning Smuggers,

I hope you are all keeping safe and well.

I have a problem with my Magic Mouse. I plugged it in overnight to charge it, and now I can’t get it to work at all. (I am using my old plug-in mouse).

The Magic Mouse has been fairly unresponsive in recent weeks, having to be coaxed to do anything at all. I am wondering if it is now actually dead and should be replaced. But how can I tell?

Your advice and/or suggestions would be appreciated.

Do you have another Mac/cable you can use it with to test?

I have one of the old battery powered models. The thing suffers when the lens gets grubby so a bit of isopropyl alcohol and a cotton bud work wonders. Otherwise, in your case, if a bit of fluff has got into the charge port, this can cause it to not charge. Worth a look.

Thank you, Sam. I’ll try it with my iPhone cable.

Sam, I took the cable from my iPhone and used it to charge the Magic Mouse. I left it on charge for about one hour –– and it is now working perfectly!

Please may I borrow your magic wand for use in other areas of my life?

Thank you Sam!

Gilly

One time, after having no problems, I plugged the headphones into my iPod touch and heard absolutely nothing. I assumed the worst, then, either a search online or a query on here suggested checking for fluff in the jack socket. After rummaging with a cocktail stick (I think) I found a large lump of fluff and ... headphones were working perfectly again.

We had to reset our new router/wireless the other day after which I tried to use our Airport Express in the lounge to play music via Airplay through the stereo. Silence. I thought “Oh dear, resetting the router has totally confused it. I’m going to have to reset the AE, connect it with Ethernet to the router, then set it up all over again”. Grim. Then, just when I was about to take it upstairs to do all that I noticed that the audio cable, which should run from the hifi to the AE, was actually plugged into the back of the monitor in the lounge! I reconnected and it all worked fine! What a plonker...

It’s so easy to overlook the simple things and assume the worst (and more expensive).

You’re right, Stephen. I was even to the point of finding out what a new Magic Mouse would cost!

Reminds me of a friend who worked as a TV engineer in the 90s - very capable man as an electronics engineer - he dines out on the stories of home repair visits, whilst admitting 90% of them required him to simply turn the TV on at the wall as the befuddled user had forgotten to check in their panic!

:)

Great it's all sorted, Gillian. I always always try the least expense and most simple fix.... last, or too late!

I have never forgotten the lesson of spending an entire afternoon trying to help a friend get his printer working again. It had worked the previous morning. We did everything to no avail. As I left, saying 'sorry!' I noticed a trailing plug.

'Did someone vacuum in here yesterday afternoon?'

If I had noticed it coming in it would have been a very quick solution!

Now I always start with 'are you SURE it's plugged in? Check. Yes, CHECK.'

cheers,
Jason
