Hi

My sister's mac died but all safely backed up to external hdd.

She's not planning on replacing it as iPad and iphone suffice. But all her music!

What's the easiest way to access the iTunes library from the hdd and upload to iTunes Match, without her own Mac!?!?

Is it possible?

do you mean the contents of the library (music) as well as the
information (list of tracks)?

Did she have iTunes Match on to start with? It would have uploaded it
all then?

If not, i think you need to connect the HD to something, run it off
there until it's uploaded all the tracks with her AppleID (as used on
iPad) logged in (unless she only has stuff that's the apple store).

How was the backup done? Time Machine or a clone?

I'll ask and get back to you. A friend took the data off the drive when the motherboard failed so I presume a clone.

And no, she's not used Match before, so would like to upload her songs to that and hence prevent this worry again!

then she needs a kind friend who will attache her old HD to their
machine, launch her iTunes library, do the passwords etc, and leave it
uploading til it's done.

Thanks Jason.... I could be that friend (!) but would it merge our iTunes libraries?

Or do I setup a new and separate user in Mavericks, copy the library over and do it that way?

You could use the Migration Assistant to import her user from the backup, selecting to import only the Music folder

I don't see why. You would have to launch her itunes library (the file) or hold down option on launch to navigate to it but it would be a separate one.

I would create a new user for her on your mac; plug in the HD and launch the iTunes library file (not folder) (This chimes with Sam's advice).

There might be a trick getting it to see the actual files, which might be resolved by booting from her disk (and leaving overnight? how much music are we talking about?)

NB this is how to save all the metadata (play count etc).

If you don't care about that you just create a new user on your mac, get her to log with her AppleId and drop the itunes folder (with music etc in it) onto the iTunes icon, ensuring you have deselected 'Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library' in the Prefs/Advanced. It will then add it all to the library. As before, then you swtich on Match and let it upload (you can leave it running in the background while you use your machine on your account, with hers in the background)
