Any other Smuggers already backed up their iOS 6 devices already in
preparation for today?

I reckon about 6pm UK time.

I'm going to wait until non-critical time and even then I'm hesitant.
Most upgrades for me have ended up requiring a reset and reinstall.

I have an iPad 2, iPad mini (at work) and iPhone 5 (already looking
embarrassed about having a passcode). Having upgraded my old 3GS to iOS
6 and effectively made it unusable, I'm wary of upgrading the iPads.
Then again, I think that was the second iOS update for that phone (did
they come with 4 or 5?).

So I'll be looking out for performance results. AND I'm not sure I want
different OSs running on different devices.

All of which means I'm holding off for a bit. The 5 should be fine,
since the 5c is virtually the same hardware, but I do like my iPad and
don't want to upgrade him just yet.

I'm backed up and ready to go - on my 4S at least, the original iPad is heading for retirement when the refresh is announced (hopefully before Christmas)

I am not going to back up anything as with any major update, I like doing a clean install. Contacts are backed up so I'm fine with the rest.

I'll be in Bangkok tonight so I guess I'll install it tomorrow morning.

I would be backed-up, raring and ready to go but I'm developing an app that I want to run on iOS6 and if I upgrade now I'll have no device left to test it on as my dear old iPad Classic is still languishing on iOS 5.1.1.

Maybe I need to buy a cheap old device I can load with iOS6 just for testing ... calling eBay?

If only I had huge amounts of money I'd be fine. ;)

I'm the same as Stephen. I need to keep iOS 6 for an app I'm working on. Sounds like a good excuse to buy a separate 5c or 5s though ;-)

Will anybody be updating an iPhone 4?

I'd be grateful if people posted their experiences if you do! I'm keen to update, but iOS 4 ruined my old 3G...

I know it won't run like lightning, but as long as it works, without huge lags. Be grateful if anybody could post their findings here!

YouTubes of the GM release on said device look promising, but I'm nervous after 3G experiences way back when.

Thanks

Adam

p.s. Oh, and is a full restore advised? Will it pull my data from my Mac again? (contacts, calendars, mailboxes etc?) Or if no real benefit do I just 'Update'?

A tiny word of warning if your apps are critical to you. We checked our apps in ios7 and there is a shedload of work to do. We're not going to have our app fully looking like it should until Saturday. We are a small outfit and have a gezillion things going on, so not an ebay or dropbox who probably had theirs sorted weeks ago, we aren't our app guys no1 income earner so to speak. Anyway we tested it on ios7 on the simulator two days ago and it looked abysmal. Still functional but only just.

Sorry to put a possible negative on the situation. As far as I'm concerned I'm going to go for it as I'm too intrigued to not see it ASAP. I'll be getting my fix as soon as it's available and have volunteered myself for the ios7 live testing :)

Good point Michael.  that said, there's been a positive blizzard of updates coming today.  I think I'm up to 14 so far since I got up this morning.  And there was at least half a dozen yesterday...

So far all my well used apps are updated, but there are a few "little" ones that haven't got there yet.

Well, I've finally built my app for iOS7. It runs 'OK' but almost all of the errors are visual glitches and most of those seem to be to do with the status bar being part of the action now rather than separate.

I'm plesantly surprised that it did not crash and burn ...

Oddly, a dialog box where the user types text is fine on iOS6 and below but looks as if someone has squashed it in iOS7. It still functions as before but it's a bit hard to read! ;)

Ah the joys of software.

Only 3? Wimp ;)

After numerous false starts, this thing is finally "Preparing update..." Though it's been doing that for at least 15 minutes.

The iPhone 4 is still 2 hours away. I'm going to have to turn various "features" of iOS 7 off on that I think or the battery will drain.  The background app updating for example.

Hi Pat.
Upgraded my 4s about 6.15 last night. Everything went smoothly with no problems. Just trying to get used to the new look Apps. I really like the Calendar now, much easier to navigate. Not sure if I like everything though.
I also upgraded my iPad mini, with all the same results and thoughts.
Hope this helps. Go for it.

I've updated my iPad 2 taking about 7 hours over a very slow connection in the wilds near Malvern. Update went smoothly and like most new things there is quite a lot to assimilate.

My main gripe is that the iWork apps seem to be antiquated now but I dare say this will change. Big plus for me straight off is a much clear presentation in Mail.

Dear All
I have a second generation iPad (version 6.1.3 (10B329) if this helps to identify it) I had expected that I would be notified through the App Store that the update to iOS7 would be needed. I have had lots of updates for Apps to make them compatible with iOS7, but no information about the grand operating system itself. Am I misunderstanding something here? Does a second generation iPad need or qualify for iOS7 after all?
Do I go somewhere to get iOS7?

I'm looking forward (nervously) to Russell's reports of how things are on his iPhone 4!

Just heard that Fantastical is soon to release v2, iOS7 only, with some much wanted features. This will be the future for most apps I should think, so might be forced to go to iOS7!

Russell - is it working nicely?!?!

If it's too laggy, I'd rather not...!

So far I think it's a big step forward. Aside from the visual facelift dragging it into the modern age and the removal of the horrendous skeuomorphism, the remote activation-lock should hopefully bring down iPhone thefts.

Not too sure about the iBeacon technology, hopefully retailers will use it sparingly and we won't be bombarded with localised adverts & offers as we walk through shops.

Haven't managed to get AirDrop to recognise my fiancée's phone yet, but then there are already hundreds of pictures of our dog on there, no need to transfer any more to her.

Oh I'm going to have to join y'all!

Thing is, do I just hit 'update' which is preferable for speed and ease, or, do I do a 'restore' and start from scratch?

Does it make a difference to performance overall?

Thanks

Adam

I doubt it makes much difference, I just ran the in-place updater on the phone and it's snappy as ever.

Back up to computer (plug in and do a manual backup) then do it from the iDevice.

My twopenneth:

Even on my trusty iphone 4, this is a brilliant update.

It works brilliantly, and the few places it lags a fraction, are insignificant. Moreover it's outweighed by speed improv ents elsewhere eg Spotlight, Camera.

At first, I wasn't hugely in favour of the UI overhaul, but really prefer it after a half fu use. My wife's iOS device now seems dated.

Nothing is there for the sake of it. Hence animations and transparencies aren't eye candy (merely) they help me navigate and interact a whole lot better with the device.

Stock apps are much nicer to use all round, and it really is like having a new device. It's a smart move ensuring those on 4 year old devices (hardly old-old) are now in the iOS7 ecosystem. I'm now much more likely to become reliant on the features of my most used apps that will mean a new handset will one day be needed!

It's vastly superior to iOS6 in many, many ways. And I loved 6. I couldn't imagine how such seemingly minor tweaks would make a phone so much more useful at what I need it to do. But they do.

FYI if you've not updated, I backed up and then updated on device. It took 45mins all said and done and couldn't have been easier.

Fears and errors when iOS 4 ruined my 3G are but a distant memory. Apple have not made those errors again and reports that the 4 can't handle ios7 are clearly from folks who are used to the speed of a 5.

It works splendidly.

Thanks Russell et al, for very helpful posts  that convinced me to update!

I've also updated my 4S and haven't noticed any issues.

Battery life doesn't seem to have improved I'm now at 36% after a morning of 3G and wifi emails, browsing and iMessages and a few calls. I have all radios and location services on (of the mind I want it enabled when I need it).

Thanks for that info, Adam (and Russell)

I have an iPhone 4 and really didn't want to update it, after the same dismal experience with my 3G.

But I'm going to be brave now and update - possibly even this afternoon :-)

Best wishes
Catherine

Just to add more experience to the iPhone 4 conversation I took the updating plunge yesterday. So far no problems, time lag not really an issue and everything I use regularly still works. I also backed up to iCloud first and after that the upgrade was both smooth and completed well within the hour. I am certainly glad that I did it.

Well, I installed iOS7 on my iPad2. It all went very smoothly and quite quickly. I think I like the new interfaces and design. Intellectually, I kind of support the Ives' approach of iconoclasm. Looking at it now it seems very sugary and bright. Must find a good wallpaper to experience it to best effect.
Aside from the aesthetic experience, it all functions pretty much as before. There seem to be extra features in iPhoto, Maps and a nice experience of everything talking to everything else...

Thanks for the advice and commentary everyone.

I agree it's an excellent update. Even our apps are fine, unlike in the simulator, they just lok as normal. I guess there is something in their code that recognises certain things in the apps to see if they have been updated for iOS7. If that's the case it's clever and very Apple, (or not Microsoft :)).

i love the way it all moves and like Adam says things aren't there for aesthetics, they are there for function, but they look great. The only thing I don't like are the muddy coloured backgrounds of the icon folders, a small thing. I also havent worked out how to change the background wallpaper. i can only seem to change the sleep/ awake wallpaper.

I have to confess I was thinking of changing as Natalie's Android had an update ad it was very slick. This is slicker in my opinion though.

Same way as in iOS6:

Settings > Wallpapers & Brightness

Tap below "CHOOSE WALLPAPER"

Tap on Dynamic or Stills depending on preference (or perhaps device too?)

Tap on the image you want

Tap 'Set'

Tap 'Set Home screen'

Done! :)

I should add re my ios4 debacle, after much effort, I was one of the lucky ones that Apple gave a free device upgrade to.

Hence, I'm still with them!

Dear All - I've just updated to IO7. I don't much like the pastel colours, but the rest of it is unexpectedly lovely, and I'm off to play. My iPhone 4 hasn't lost any speed, which was my big worry.

Best wishes

Is there a list anywhere of apps that don't support iOS7?
