My partner has noticed that he has had no emails for a couple of weeks. I logged on to my easyspace control panel and found this

Is this AVG software safe to run on my iMac? I have an inbuilt distrust of things I don’t understand! Any advice would be most wellcome.

Many thanks

Andrew

AVG is well-established and perfectly safe. However, before running anything like that on my Mac I'd contact the company to make sure there's not a simpler explanation - missed a payment, run out of email storage etc. I'd get them to confirm that before running any - potentially - unnecessary AV software.

Very sensible suggestion and I will do that! Thank you.

The company involved said that the account had been sending out thousands of emails. They wanted me to scan “all devices used by the account” for viruses. So I’m scanning the iMac now. And presumably need to scan the iPhone. Any advice on software to use?! Thanks in advance

When I downloaded a software update that had been infected with adware I used the free version of Malwarebytes. That seemed to clear things up.

There's some good - and not overly hysterical - advice here (https://www.techlicious.com/tip/what-to-do-when-your-email-gets-hacked/)

Was his mailbox password easy to guess? Or had it been re-used with his email address on a different website?

Hi Sam.

I wouldn’t have thought that the password was THAT easy to guess - but it is going to be changed for something much more robust!  His email address was on his website and still is.  Perhaps that is the problem…

I meant more if he’d signed up to (for example) Dropbox with those same login details, then Dropbox gets hacked, exposing those login details for use on other services

Ah got it! No, he hadn’t done anything like that! I’ve done a scan on the iMac which cleared out some stuff and also on the phone, changed the password and easyspace has now got it all up and running again so thanks all for the help! I would never have managed otherwise!

Interesting idea - is Dropbox prone to being hacked? More so than other things? I was planning to use it more but might not do …

Not specifically no, it just happened around 2008 I think and exposed login details for millions of customers, many of whom had used those login details elsewhere.

https://haveibeenpwned.com/ is a great way of checking if your login details have ever been exposed in historic hacks and goes some way to explaining the spam emails doing the rounds saying “I know your password, it’s X and I’ll hack you if you don’t give me money”

Thanks! I used the link you said and of course had been - but I have in any case changed all passwords since then so hopefully that will be OK!
