Hi all
I have been away from my computer lately and I remember hearing some disquiet about the early Mountain Lion upgrade.
Anyway my question is - I have a 4gb MacBook Pro running 10.7.4. Is it safe? Is it safe and worthwhile to upgrade to mountain lion?
I just don't want to spend eons sorting computer problems out if I do the upgrade. I have been using my iPad so much lately and its such a joy because it just works, no problems with apps at all.

I've been wondering a similar thing.

My MacBook Pro got slower, but not unusable when upgraded to Lion that I am waiting until 10.8.1 to be out before considering the next upgrade.  Has anyone else had a slow computer disaster with their slightly older machines or is mountain lion generally safe in this respect?
This is a handy list of Lion/Mountain Lion tested 3rd party applications if there are any specific apps you are worried about.

Hi All

I think generally I've noticed a speed improvement since updating to ML, however I'm thinking of a ram upgrade to 8gb since the latest aperture update...

Do keep up posted Andy! I, like you, am waiting. 10.8.1 is not out, with .2 released for Developer review.... I've still not taken the plunge, but if you go first, let me know your thoughts.

Specifically, I want to know that it doesn't get slower, and animations don't start getting laggy again.

If I leap first, I'll of course let y'all know on here too!

thanks

I installed 10.8.1 last night and tbh honest I can't say I've noticed any increases in performance; if anything wifi takes longer to establish after coming back from sleep.

I did however upgrade from 4GB RAM earlier in the week to 8 and that has made a huge increase. Well worth the £25 from Mr Memory.

Alistair, what are you running ML on out of interest?

Also did you upgrade from Lion or Snow Leopard, as I went from SL to
ML and did notice a change, I've got a 2009 MBP and developing java
code, the build times appear to drop 10-15% just by upgrading to ML.

The only downside is using the 8GB from Mr Memory after about a week
the laptop will start randomly rebooting and some cold starts it will
reboot 1-5 times before I'm logged in. Put the original 4GB back in
and it's fine.

I would be tempted to swap the new RAM then, I used 8GB from crucial and haven't had any problems at all.

Upgrade was from 10.8 public release installed back in August which was on top of the last point release of 10.7

Thanks for the tip re memory, will keep an eye open and the 2x2GB handy

Sam, a while back you mentioned that there would be a negligible difference if I put more RAM in with Lion, and better go for an SSD.

I haven't yet done either... but do you now think that 8GB for ML on an Early MBP would make a difference?

Thanks

You could also try memtest

I think it was more the difference between 8 and 16GB wouldn't be noticeable. From 2 to 4 is definitely good, 2 to 8 even better.

The SSD will provide an additional massive speed increase. I'd never go back to a normal drive!

Thanks.

I have 4GB (2x2GB) and would hence go to 8GB (2x4GB).... worth a go? Just watching the pennies I guess..... but if you think it's worth it...

Else, I'll save for the SSD!

I went from 4 to 8 in a 15" mid 2009 MBP and it's definitely made a difference

SL was happy with the Mr Memory 8GB, it's only ML that is having issues

Given that RAM's not expensive, I'd go for 8GB and the SSD if you can. If not then go for just the SSD, it'll provide the biggest speed increase.
