Hi SMUGgers,

I now have my Mac mini and I’ve noticed something a bit odd that, as far as I know, didn’t happen with the iMac. (If so, because the mini has a big flat top this issue may be more noticeable).

What I have found is that most times I put my hand on my mini after I’ve not used it for hours, or overnight and it’s warm, which I’m not expecting. When I look I find that Music is running, so I quite the app - yep, only Finder and ’tips’ running. I go out all day, come back and it’s quite warm again and when I check, Music is running!

I’ve not played any music on any device today and I quit Music on the mini last night.

Is there some setting that needs adjusting? Surely Music should not be starting of its own accord?

Yours rather mystified,
Stephen

The keyboard is wireless Sam, but sadly we no longer have our cat, or any other creature in the house (except spiders!)

If you also have wireless headphones and push the play/pause button when they’re synced to the MacMini, that’ll open the Music app

Hi Sam,

I have AirPods Pro but I’ve not (intentionally) been connecting them to my Mac. But, there could be something in that.

Are there any system logs I can interrogate to see what’s starting it? I quit Music again last night (I checked). This morning the Mac was warm, and behold, Music was running again! It’s so weird. There’s a reason somewhere …

Hi Stephen,

A random thought - might it be in Open at Login list of apps. Then, perhaps there’s an event at night that triggers the login item to activate (System Preferences- Energy - Start up automatically after a power failure).

Yes …

Nosing around the Inteerweb, I’ve found that this 'Apple designed' issue has been around so long that there is an app designed to stop it! You can find it here: https://github.com/tombonez/noTunes?tab=readme-ov-file

I will report back on its efficacy.

I use my AirPods a lot but, to my knowledge, I’ve not connected them to my Mac at all as they are most used with my iPad and iPhone and occasionally with TV. I think the only time I’ve ever connected them to my Mac has been when playing games as it’s much easier to bash the keyboard when wires aren’t trailing across it!

One possibility I suppose, is that I often listen to Podcasts in bed (currently for this, which is an absolute MUST if you love this TV series as I do: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-jeremy-brett-sherlock-holmes-podcast/id1449254170) and the Mac is next door. I wonder if when I first put them in my ears the Mac grabs them before I have a chance to connect them with the iPhone? I expect they are both 'within reach’ even though the iPhone is sitting on my lap!

Anyway, I will keep you posted.

Cheers,
Stephen

Thanks Paul. I had considered that too, except that I don’t logout of my user (just lock the screen) and there have been no power cuts of late. Also, I have only 5 apps start at login and Music is not one of them.

Cheers,
Stephen

by the way it's not possible to 'not connect' them. The BT pairing is automatically shared between all your devices (I've never found a way to turn this off).

You can only select whether it automatically connects or 'only when last connected to this device'. Maybe switch it to the latter as the former sounds plausible.

Cheers,

Jason

That sounds plausible Jason. I think the “No iTunes” app seems to be doing the job and I like the ‘automatically switch’ feature between devices so don’t want it to only work with one device.

I’ll know better tomorrow how the app is doing.

Hi all,

Quick update - the small menu bar app that I’ve installed has done the job! 😀

It prevents Music from launching, but when you actually do want to open Music manually then the menu bar toggle just needs flipping and away you go.

Cheers,
Stephen
