Hi Smuggers. The latest update on iPad has mucked up the accessibility function. One of the great assets of the iPad has been the zoom function - I could tap on screen and enlarge an item. Now this useful function has gone. If I open the zoom function in Settings, the whole page is enlarged and there is no way I can see of making it smaller Therefore reading a paper online is infuriating because the back button is no longer visible because page is too large. Have one of you clever Smuggers discovered a way round this? I want to be able to zoom in and out using my fingers. Virginia

In which app are you zooming? Perhaps the app has a zoom feature so you don’t need to zoom the entire display?

Mostly the Guardian.  But also my bank account.  I guess I can work around it BUT I wish Apple hadn’t messed it up!

Hello Virginia,

In Accessibility on iPadOS 26 there are quite a number of Zoom related settings. One is “Zoom Region” which on my iPad is set to Window Zoom. There is also a Zoom Controller. Perhaps Apple have re-arranged some of the settings and the things you want are still there but in one of these other sections. Apple Support may be able to help - the support app (free from the App Store) has an accessibility section and led me to an option where I could phone support.

There is an Accessibility testing community website forum that could help … if only I could remember their name! Doh! I may remember.

Regards,
Stephen

Hope you resolved it all, Virginia.

Your post title reminded me of a recent article in our technological context of endless updates: The Last Quiet Thing (via John Gruber at Daring Fireball) that resonated.

Perhaps some Sunday afternoon reading! It's a nice essay, beautifully 'presented' and animated with food for thought...

Enjoy!

Thanks, Adam,  I resolved problem by phoning Apple support.  Great service!    I wish I could read the article attached to your email but white on black is very difficult for me to read.  I skimmed the headings and got the gist of it.  All good sense.

Great to hear all resolved, thanks Virginia. Sorry to hear about white on black and I don't know if it's possible to invert webpages under any Accessibility options.

But another thumbs up for Apple Support. My son went in to Exeter store with a 'very well loved/used/dropped' iPhone Mini 12 that was struggling to hold power. They took it out back for 20mins, did a bit of a service to get it up and running (advising it'll soon need replacement battery) but all working and free of charge. Given such an old device, nice to see they're putting all their income somewhere.

Albeit a bit miffed that Apple Maps (US) will now start showing Ads, so inevitably heading our way. Historically I've justified Apple's premium price / service partly to enjoy the  'ad free' experience.

We're also seeing this with Pages etc being bundled into premium versions.

I think it's connected to the move into Neo territory – cheaper hardware, where some of the profit is now made through software.

I suspect the ads in Maps will be businesses being able to sponsor showing up rather than your driving instructions including a word from the sponsor but I agree it's depressing to see ads everywhere you go, on almost everything you see.

Cheers,

Jason

Observations:

As I understand it an ad may/will only be shown when you do a search in Maps - so if you search for nearby garages then “Joe’s garage” may pop up as the first offering if Joe sent a few ££s to Apple.

The chargeable additions to Pages, Numbers, Keynote and Freeform are all for extra optional features and all existing features are still present for free as they have been for years. As far as I remember, having had iWork from its first release, those three apps had to be purchased initially and … came in a box!

Whether these stay this way is something time will tell but I really hope the temptation to start putting ads in multiple places will be restrained. It’s not as though Apple needs the money.

Cheers,
Stephen
