Eve homeplug not working with router extension

Hi folks

I bought an Eve plug (Home-compatible) from Apple to connect to the TP link extender in my home office (garage).

We have a Virgin router in the house. After a few failed attempts to get it paired/set up, I managed this easily in the house. But taking it back to the garage, it will not connect to the TP link. Both talk about using/offering 2.4 and 5 gHz so they should be compatible.

Any suggestions before I send it back? It doesn't seem possible to interact directly with the plug settings to tweak them or add wifi passwords (etc). But the passwords are the same, and it worked in the house...

It has power (green light).
