Whoops!

I spotted an email in my junk folder, but it seemed legit. It was from designersguild.com, and had an attached Order Confirmation.

Foolishly, whilst I didn't recall ordering anything, I thought it seemed worth checking and opening. It opened a blank document in Pages.

Presumably it could be malicious.

Is there anything I can do to ensure it's not installed some malware, recording key strokes for passwords, credit cards etc?!?!

Feeling rather foolish. I normally always just auto-purge the junk folder.

Any tips to check no harm done please?

Thanks

Adam

Just to add, the file was a .docm file, so the Macros Enabled worries me a little.

I've deleted said file and email, but how to check that nothing is at work behind the scenes? I've never bothered with any anti-virus being a Mac....

What a muppet to have opened it!?!

Not sure, but given that it was a Word doc with macros they won't have run as it opened in Pages, not Word, and to my knowledge Pages would ignore them.

Thanks Steven.

Most kind to reply.

Is that right about the macros? It couldn't be that the macro was to download a key logger app? I'm terrified about the next time I access 1password!!

Hi Adam,

I don’t use Word but my understanding is that to execute/run Word macros you would need the document to be opened in Microsoft Word. You said that it was a .docm document that opened in Pages - that would imply that you don’t have Word on your Mac. Pages does not have any macros at all so it definitely can’t run Word macros so there should be no need for concern.

Anyone who knows .docx/Word/Pages better than I may have something else to add.

Cheers,

Stephen

Again, thanks Stephen.

I also posted something on to Apple Forums and got a very similar reply, so thanks again.

Hoping all is ok, and a timely warning perhaps.

Cheerio

Adam
