Hello all

Like lots of us, I've had to download lots of new software and apps to be working from home on macOS.

Most are direct from websites, not Mac App Store, but none seem to ask me for Admin password to install? Is that because I'm logged in as an administrator?

I recall in the 'old days' there seemed be a few more 'are you sure?' type steps along the way. Now, I'm simply asked  'this was from the internet, you sure you want to open' but that's after I've already installed.

Do I need to change some settings somewhere?!?!

Thanks

Adam

From the sound of it, those are innocuous because they have registered as a developer - thus the simple check. If apps come from unregistered developers, it would initially refuse to open it.

But it depends on which OS you're running (newer is more secure). What do you have in System Prefs/Security and Privacy/General? On Mojave for instance it says 'allow apps downloaded from app store' or 'App store and identified developrs'. I think earlier versions let you launch just anything.

None of this means you should be careless. If you unexpectedly get a prompt to enter your admin password, be suspicious and make a note of what exactly is asking, and google it. If you get it from launching an app you just downloaded, it's probably safe (but again, depends on the source - if it's a dodgy-looking website, google it (or don't download at all).

Hope this helps,

I’ve noticed recently that apps will ask permission for stuff when you first run them as opposed to during the install.  App x would like to access your documents folder would you like to allow this? yes/no

Only apps with an installer would typically ask, I’ve installed stuff in the last few days and have been prompted for credentials, so maybe just you haven’t installed any “big” apps like Adobe or ms Office suite.

Typical “little” apps where you just drop them into applications folder and go don’t usually prompt for credentials as they don’t usually require any extra permissions.
