Friends,

About to get a new Macbook (not quite sure which, yet) - provided by new job.

My current MBPro (13" Touchbar) is ok, but often the fans fire up and sound like a 747. I'm regularly in Activity Monitor killing cryptically titled tasks!

I wondered if there's any tips on migrating from old to new, whilst conscious I don't want any 'bugs' or dodgy extension that's causing fans in to overdrive, to migrate too?!?!

Thanks

Hi Adam,

Not all MacBooks are fitted with fans these day. The CPUs are very efficient and do not produce much heat.

My MacBook Air has an M4 chip and no fan. I understand this model is now fitted with an M5.

Killing processes is never a good idea, they’ll only re-spawn to complete whichever tasks they’ve been assigned to complete. Intel-based Macs are 1000x slower than the Apple-Silicon based Macs, so I wouldn’t worry about it, just migrate using an external Time Machine backup, or direct via a thunderbolt cable (wifi’s fine in a pinch but can take a while)

Thanks all.

So you're less worried there's some gremlin causing the fans and I can migrate away?

And in that case, I presume any setup wizard on the new Mac (it's been a while) will give me options and I just plug in a cable (thunderbolt port to thunderbolt port)

Migration’s automatic and very easy yes. From an external drive with a Time Machine backup is definitely the easiest

All done. Painlessly, just as Sam advised!

Simply plugged in the TimeMachine et voila!

Thanks so much
