Microsoft Office refuses to work

Hello everybody,

Microsoft Word has suddenly started to give the error message:

'Word cannot open the document: user does not have access privileges'

Excel also doesn't work and gives the message 'file format or file
extension is not valid'.

I've tried granting full disk access in Privacy and Security settings to
Word, and also tried replacing the UBF8T346G9.Office folder from a Time
Machine backup date when everything was working. Neither has fixed it.

Can anyone help please?

You shouldn’t need to grant full disk access to Word/Excel, they don’t need access to the system and library files so might be an idea to remove that.

Is it happening with all documents, or just the one? Are the documents local or cloud-based?

Are the office apps and macOS all up to date and have you tried restarting?

Hello Sam, thanks for helping. 

It’s happening with all documents, which are all local, although occasionally the odd one will open. Then I close it and try again and it doesn’t open. 

I’ve updated my Office apps. My OS is 26.4. 

I’ve restarted many times. I’ve also tried shutting down many times.
