Hi y’all,

All good wishes of the season to one and all 😄

Any idea why the TouchID on my Magic Keyboard is no longer available? All options are ticked in System Preferences but every option (except Remove Fingerprint) is greyed out.

I restarted the iMac with the keyboard attached by cable and the options were all black again. I locked the screen, no TouchID option for unlock available so typed my password and all settings greyed out again! I’ve run Apple Diagnostics which reports ADP000 for All fine. The battery went flat a while ago in the trackpad but not the keyboard as I recall, they are both now 100% but I did switch them both off to save wasting battery. They work fine - apart from TouchID.

Any ideas, otherwise it’s Apple support I suppose?

Regards,

Stephen

Can you remove the fingerprint then re-add?

I’ve not tried that Sam as the Add Fingerprint option is greyed out too! Only the remove option seems to work. FYI, it’s the same behaviour on my Admin login as well.

Try removing the fingerprint, then the add fingerprint option might be enabled. If that doesn’t work, call Apple Support as the keyboard might be faulty.

Hi Sam,

That just deleted a fingerprint!

I got to step 7 and it worked. Had to wait a while for it to Connect again after switching it on even thought it was connected by cable. I disconnected the cable, put the iMac to sleep, touched a key and had the TouchID option available and it all worked fine. 😄

I was thinking earlier, before getting it sorted, that if it was faulty and happened to be returned, it would be the first Apple product I’ve ever owned where there was something wrong with the hardware that required attention (excluding the disk that failed in my iMac with the half-dome base back in 2003).

Cheers and here’s hoping that everyone has a healthy and considerably better 2022.
