Does anyone have opinions about Experian (“Identity Plus”)?

My water supplier Southern Water has contacted me telling me that my personal details have been stolen from their servers. They then advise me to sign up to Experian (12 month free credit monitoring service).

I’m dubious. Does anyone have advice about what I should do?

I got the same email as I was a customer until I moved away over 4 years ago. It seems quite legitimate and I’ve signed up for the free Experian identity service. The referral code you got in the email does work for the free year’s service.

Thanks guys. I believed that the data leak was true - it’s just the signing up to Experian I was unsure about.

I think it's now fairly standard. It basically means 'ok, you may now be subject to identity theft, so here you go, you keep an eye on things'.

However cynical I might sound (and be), I do recommend keeping an eye on things;)

Anything major relating to your finances (eg someone applying for a loan or credit card) should show up there.

The company I work for had a databreach a year or two back (but just in america)  similar stolen identities and info., leaked by an HR person who fell for a very well targeted and exceuted phishing email.   The company bought either Experian or Equifax?  one of the two..  credit protection for all the US staff,  and some of my team mates are still getting notifications that someone has tried to do xxx in their name (apply for a loan/bank account/car finnance that sort of thing)

I logged onto gmail today so I could fish out those details and sign myself up with the reference code.   I also had 2 letters from southern water about this, and it's been in tech news.

I'm not personally advising, suggesting or endorsing the service..  But i'm going to take them up on the offer
