My MBP (2017 10.15.5) is going slowly. Would emptying the caches help? Are there any cache files I should avoid deleting? (There are about 70 in the cache folder)

Have you tried a safe reboot? Hold shift as the Mac boots up, let go when you see the apple logo & progress bar. It’ll take a bit longer than normal to boot up but just restart straight away when it’s up and running.

I’d also run a full scan in MalwareBytes in case you’ve accidentally installed any adware/malware.

Thank, Sam.  I have both those things.  Should I leave the cache as it is?

A Safe boot will remove all cache files anyway
