Normally, as I go through a list of incoming emails, a picture of the current email appears on the right, as in this screenshot:

These days, I am finding that nothing appears on the right as I go through the list. I have to double-click on an email to get an idea of what it is about. Any comments or suggestions welcome.

Does the list of emails extend all the way to the right, or is the preview area there, but it’s blank?

One thing to try would be to:

  • Quit Mail
  • Go to the Go menu > Home
  • Go into the Library folder > Mail > V7/8/9 (whichever number is highest) > MailData
  • Delete any files starting with EnvelopeIndex
  • Reopen Mail and select to reimport all your mail.

That should re-index the mail stored on your Mac, might take a while but could help

Sam, when I went into Go – Home, there was no Library folder visible. Therefore also no Mail V7 etc.

Is there anything else I can do?

Dear Gilly,

Try it holding down ALT before you click on the Go menu. This usually 'unhides' Library. Keep ALT down until you've clicked on Library then it should show a folder in the Finder where you can see Mail (and so on).

cheers,
J

If you view your home folder as a list (View menu > Show as List) then go to the View menu > Show View Options > there will be a tickbox to show the Library folder.

Thank you Jason, that was very helpful. It certainly did bring up Library, but I still cannot find Mail anywhere. I would appreciate any further suggestions.

Hi Gilly

Try going to the Go menu (in Finder) > Go to Folder > type in the following location ~/Library/Mail and push return. The tilde character ~ means ‘your home folder’ wherever that is.

I did that, Sam, but it only produced Desktop – Local

I have realised that this is all a bit beyond me. Sam, may I request an online “house call” (with a bill at the end), and ask that you sort out my Mail, please?
