simple rest question

I want to do this:

* James Diet
* Heidi Diet
* Gift Ideas
* Genealogy

* Publication Ideas

* CSPaperIdeas
* James Work
* MythTV
* Phone Book
* Fish
* Allowance Ideas

Except in the final output, the spaces around all sub list items are
VERY annoying, how do I get rid of them? If I leave the spaces out of
the rest source I get an error. This is stupid if that is what you
have to do, and we should find something better than rest.

Especially if you are playing with auto numbered lists, if you want a
sub item, and then to continue the auto numbered list, how do you do
that?
