Hi - I have Leopard - never downloaded Lion. Now I think I'd like to install Mountain Lion. Can I without having downloaded Lion first? Thanks!

You’ll need an Intel Mac running OS X 10.6.8 or later, with 2GB of RAM, and 8GB of internal storage. The list of systems supported is as follows:

  • iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
  • Xserve (Early 2009)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)

Leopard won't be able to install it because it can only be purchased from the Mac App Store. The App Store won't let you purchase it unless you meet the minimum requirements.

Apple was offering MobileMe users a free upgrade to Snow Leopard, but now the MobileMe is officially shut down I don't know if it is still available.

Actually, for at least beta-testing 10.8 Mountain Lion, Apple requires at least 4 GB of RAM. Having merely 8 GB of internal storage is WAY too low! I'd at least quadruple that. The Golden Master released yesterday requires 5 GB of space just for the download!

For the beta-testing we were required to have Lion already installed. But I'd wait and see what the final requirements are going to be for downloading 10.8. 

Don't be in a hurry to grab 10.8 when it arrives. It is likely to still have bugs as Apple are rushing it out for July. For example, the version before the new Golden Master still had some extremely annoying networking problems, some of which were related to the IPV6 transition. Sadly, there have also been some lousy memory management problems  with the Finder, aka Sit & Spin. They aren't as terrible as 10.7, but I am not pleased.

Trouble in Paradise - it seems to originate with Gmail but is affecting my ability to download 2 Mountain Lion updates. Hopefully you cam see the clip above? When I try to download the updates - Gmail sticks its nose in & says I should 'check in' there because I have updates THERE. it prevents the 2 updates I have from downloading - but when I open Gmail - nothing happens. I'm ready to rid myself of Gmail - tho that will be a hassle - like a giant weed, it has wrapped itself around various programs I have & want - Facebook, blogs, web page....

Anybody know what's going on here?

Are you sure it has to do with GMail? It looks more to me like the App Store is telling you about updates under a different user name. Have you used more than one Apple ID to make app downloads from the App Store? (free or paid, doesn't matter.) Try logging into the App Store with any such alternate IDs and see if you are offered other app updates with them.

Paul - I bow down before you, guru - seriously - that thought never would have entered my mind. That's exactly what the problem was - and I still managed to stumble and fumble trying to right it. I know how to make the puter do tricks - but when it comes to the how & why - I'm a moron. Thanks to you, the updates are now safely downloaded and - I assume - all is well. Thank you SO much!

Glad to help, Sallie. This is one of the features of the App Store that I don't care for - making you log onto different App Store accounts to take care of updates for the same computer. It tripped me up too. I think this is a change for Mountain Lion although I am not certain. I suppose I understand the reasoning behind it, but I hate it.
