Disk not supported!

I just inserted a new Verbatim 2.4xDVD+R DL double layer recordable
(8.5 GB) disk in my iMac (Leopard) machine - put a big (within limits)
picture file in the burn folder - AND - got the message that iMac
couldn't accept that type of disk. Can that be right?

I just checkd back to previous posts - someone had the problem I have
& apparently corrected it by slowing down the speed of burning. No
good - my gives one speed - fast.

The exact message is 'The disc could not be used because the disc
drive is not supported, (Error code 0x80020025)'

Bummer!

A quick way to find out what kind of discs are supported.

Hold down the option key and click the Apple Menu. Select System Profiler. On the left side under Hardware is Disc Burning.

Hmmmm - this seems to show it does support writing to DVD+R DL?

Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO

Try burning with a third party burning program like Burn or SimplyBurns

I messed around with the suggestions - nothing worked - so in a last
ditch what-the-heck effort I put the Verbatim in again and - it
worked! Exactly what I tried several times before - and no dice. "Who
knows what evil lurk in the hearts of computers" - the Shadow rescued
me - and most of you don't have the faintest idea what I'm talking
about - LOL! (Ah - those 30's/40's radio shows). Anyway - I thank you
all for your efforts! :>)

I've had occasional bizarro stuff like this on all my Macs at one time or another. My usual strategy is:

1) Reboot! It is amazing how one little bit knocked the wrong way in RAM can cause problems. Who knows why it happens. It may be freaky RAM or it may be some cosmic ray that hit the chip at just the wrong spot. Beats me. All I know is that computers are NEVER perfect.

2) If rebooting fails: ZAP THE PRAM! This only helps with hardware specific problems. I don't believe PRAM holds any CD burner settings these days, but Apple are not exactly forthcoming about everything about Macs. It certainly doesn't hurt anything to do a ZAP on occasion.

3) Reinstall the CD burner software you're using. Hard drives get hit by cosmic rays too, except the effect is permanent until the software is reinstalled.

4) Reinstall the CD burner drivers. This is a pain. Basically it means reinstalling the operating system. Bleh. Thankfully I have never had to do this on a MAc. But I have on Windows PCs! That pesky Registry is typically the cause. (o_0)
