hi everyone,
FYI -- you may have seen it in the news, but Sara Lee sold it's coffee line to Smuckers yesterday, there's an article in the WSJ and I am attaching the bread buying behavior article since it's pretty interesting and makes an argument for Smuckers to acquire a "carb" producer, or have a strategic alliance with a company like Sara Lee.

I met with Diann today and she showed me some really interesting sources regarding "Lifestyle" segments, ie: married with children, single with children, married no children, etc...   this data was compiled by companies like Neilson using survey questions like, "I prefer fast foods over traditional stove top items" or "I value convenience over price" etc type of questions which may be support data for our innovations b/c then we can determine market share from this info.

Lastly, if everyone isn't already familiar with, there is a bibliography compilation software available to us via the NU Library site, there are two, but the one that is recommended for Business student is RefWorks using the APA 6th edition (no annotations) -- this will compile your sources (if you are getting them from the NU library and databases) and make it available for email or export.  Just thoguht that if everyone can start keeping tabs on their references, it may make citing sources for the final paper a lot easier.
(*you must sign up for a free account on Refworks to use it)

Thanks,
Jenny

Abstract: Bread is one of the most important staple foods in almost all countries. It is an excellent source of nutrition. The Indian bakery industry is one of the largest processed food industries and its production has been steadily increasing. This study was conducted in Coimbatore city. Random sampling was followed to select a sample of 100 households in the city. Generally, consumers preferred milk bread over sweet and wheat bread. Only one-third of the sample households consumed bread as regular diet. Generally, the households consumed bread during morning hours (breakfast). In general, consumers were buying bread from nearby bakery shops. Generally, they purchased the bread whenever required. A larger (400g) pack size was preferred by a majority of the sample respondents. Children were the decision-makers regarding the purchase of bread in majority of sample households followed by adult female members. The important factors for purchase of bread were it being easy to use and preferred by elderly people. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
