to SMT Improvisation Interest Group

Dear members of the SMT Improvisation IG,

Please consider a proposal for the call below (due February 9) and share with colleagues you think might be interested. In short: three IGs (including ourselves) are collaborating to propose a panel at SMT; if nothing else, we'll have a fruitful and interdisciplinary joint IG meeting. This panel proposal is the reason the deadline below is so soon: I hope you'll forgive that.

Andrew

Intercultural Intersections of Film, Multimedia, and Improvisation

2026 SMT Annual Meeting, Milwaukee

Collaborative Interest Group Session

  • Global Interculturalism and Musical Peripheries (GIMP) Interest Group (Host)

  • Film and Multimedia Interest Group

  • Improvisation Interest Group

We invite responses to a call for lightning talks/short presentations of 5 to 10 minutes that cover at least one of two categories: (1) intercultural music and improvisation, and/or (2) intercultural music and film/multimedia.

We welcome any topics under the broad categories above, but also offer the following subthemes/themes to consider applying under:

  • The analysis of video recordings of intercultural improvised performance in terms of gesture, texture, embodiment, or other criteria

  • Collective improvisation within intercultural ensembles, venues, or frameworks

  • Cultural integration (of two or more cultures) and/or representation in film/animation/video games.

  • Musical models or parameters of interculturalism and/or improvisation in film/animation/video game music.

Please note that the reviewers (IG chairs) will endeavor to include a broad scope of geographies and traditions in the selected papers for the program.

The collaborating IG chairs will include selected proposals in a 90-minute alternative format session submitted to the Annual Meeting CFP (due February 16). If the program committee does not select the 90-minute alternative format session, the selected proposals will be included in the 90-minute GIMP IG session at the 2026 meeting.

Proposals of 250 to 350 words should be submitted to aaron.ca...@morehouse.edu and chng...@uncg.edu (both emails to ensure receipt).

Deadline: Monday, February 9, 11:59 PM EST

Notification: Friday, February 13
