"The Biosafety Protocol seeks to protect biological diversity from the potential risks posed by living modified organisms resulting from modern biotechnology.
The Biosafety Protocol makes clear that products from new technologies must be based on the precautionary principle and allow developing nations to balance public health against economic benefits. It will for example let countries ban imports of a living modified organism if they feel there is not enough scientific evidence the product is safe and requires exporters to label shipments containing genetically altered commodities such as corn or cotton."
As the above notion is operated on the basis of precautionary principles, the method of exploiting these LMOs in agriculture can only be done through modern agriculture practices in well contained and designated areas unlike the normal agricultural practices in open fields that we see in Malaysia nowadays. If such LMOs is to be fully exploited by the local farmers, there is a need for dismantling the fundamentals under the Biosafety Protocol and to introduce the LMOs to the rakyat as wide as possible with the assumption that these LMOs are variants of the natural crops with superior qualities that will ensure good returns from the agricultural activities. From the standpoint of the researchers working in this field, the nawaitu, to me, is that God has created many resources for us to see the beauty of HIS creation and considering the different variables that we see scientifically like the outputs from different plant strains, it would be upon us to examine further the creation of God through the manipulation of the plant materials so as to maximise the benefits for us as well as bringing us closer to God.
On the other hand, if we look at recombinant technology being used in the medical field like the production of insulin for the treatment of diabetes from a recombinant microorganism , we very gladly accept the technology as beneficial to mankind just because by producing insulin through this method, we can get insulin to treat diabetes and overcome at the same time the issue of non-halal insulin extracted from porcine (babi) for Muslims or the non-acceptance of insulin extracted from bovine (lembu) by the Hindus.
The final analysis, to me, on the technology and products being created so far in biotechnology has been "pro-people friendly" but the stumbling block has been the refusal of the civil society or interest groups in the developed countries to make sure that the benefits of such technology be made available to the masses. I admit that I could be wrong in taking this stand but as long as the rationality is being discussed further, the benefits to be provided by biotechnology is enormous. It is our believe at MOSTI, Malaysia that biotechnology can feed, heal, fuel and clean the world.
Wallahualam.
