When clicking "Reply", the message thread screen crashes and the new message is lost

I have encountered this problem a few times. I'm not sure what is
causing the problem, but sometimes when I receive a new message and
the pop appears, when I click "Reply" the phone crashes on the message
thread screen and when I try to go back to the message thread the new
message I received is not displayed. After this, I cannot recover the
message by any other means such as my Gmail SMS Back-up app.

I am using a T-mobile G1 / HTC Dream
Firmware: 1.6
