to SmS Darwin Celebration day, sms-op...@googlegroups.com

Hi all,

Just in case you haven’t seen it, see below (the possibility to participate in a Research Fair explaining science to the public). We already have two volunteers for this, but we would need someone else to help, especially to be there on the day (15 and/or 16 of April) – you’ll get Money for it! and it will be fun, I can assure you. All you need is to speak Spanish or Catalan and talk to children and young people about evolution for a day! J

If interested, please let me know ASAP. We will meet on Monday at 1pm on the sofas of the 4th floor to discuss how many we are and whether we can go ahead with it…

Thanks!

Asunto: URGENT: Presenting research to the public

Hi everyone!

I have a proposal for you. The Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB) is organising a fair that they do every year with the aim of “improving scientific understanding and awareness in our society by presenting research that is currently being undertaken in Barcelona to the public”. Here is the website for more info: http://www.pcb.ub.es/homepcb/live/en/p1826.asp

They have invited the PRBB to participate. We did so last year already, we presented the ENCODE project in which researchers from the CRG, IMIM and UPF were involved. I am attaching the poster we did for it. I was involved in it together with a couple of PhD students from the CRG and the UPF.

This year we would like to give SmS (you!) the opportunity to do it, since the aim of this fair is exactly your aim. What is needed is:

-          a poster explaining a project or some type of research in a very easy way (few words, lots of pics). You only need to get some content and put it in a template that they sent us from the PCB, and they print it. So that part is easy.

-          A few volunteers to be there on the day (15 and 16 of April) explaining the project/s to the groups that visit.

-          One experiment that visitors can do to accompany the explanations/project/etc.

We were thinking that this year it would be great to present something related to evolution (because of Darwin and all), and since we are going to prepare some evolution-related experiments for the Open Day perhaps we could do one of them for this fair, as training J

BUT if you guys have another proposal please do let us know.

The bad news are:

-          it’s work (but not really that much!!! And it’s something we could reuse for the Open Day, so it’s not wasted timeJ)

-          it’s time (specially for the volunteers who will be there – it’s 2 days, from 10am to 8pm, and in the middle of the week… I suggest that at least 2 people are there at a time, and that each group of 2 is there only for half a day or something like that – so that’s 8 people (last year we were 3 and it worked, but was quite tiring!! And I understand people cannot take so much time off…)

-          it’s urgent (we have to tell them whether we are going to participate and who TOMORROW!) – NB. This is not our fault, they just sent us the invitations now… Then the deadline to present the posters is on March 6.

The good news are:

-          it’s fun!

-          it’s useful – the people who came last year were really interested and it was very gratifying explaining things to them and seeing them understand them!

-          it’s good for your economy – there is money to pay to the volunteers who will be there on the days and those who help preparing the posters (if they are different).

So, any takers?????????????????????????? I think this is another good opportunity to reach the public (last year 1300 people came).

Can anyone who is interested please reply to this email (and to all) so we see if we have enough people and what the plan is? Please do so ASAP. And if you have another proposal (e.g. your group has a very cool project that you would like to tell people about and you volunteer to do it) please do let us know too!!!!! I offer myself to help with the organisation, the posters and being there on the day for a bit…

Many thanks!
Maruxa
