Dear All

Next week, Tuesday March 3rd,  Steven Rose will be visiting the PRBB.

Steven, Emeritus Professor at the Open University, UK, is a neuroscientist and biologist and founder member of the British Society for Social Responsibility in Science. Steven Rose is widely known for his polemic, philosophical and at times, outspoken critiques of what he terms “ultraDarwinist” approaches to evolutionary theory. Steven has written several books including: “Alas, Poor Darwin: Arguments against Evolutionary Biology” and “Lifelines: Life beyond the Gene”.

Steven Rose is a highly articulate speaker and I’m sure will give engaging and thought-provoking talks of relevance to the relationship between science and society. Last week’s Nature also carried a discussion article by him, opposing the argument of whether scientists should study race and IQ (attached).

We have organised two events:

1.       “Lifelines: why our biology sets us free” an open lecture of general scientific interest in the Auditorium at 1200pm – no registration necessary

2.       “Reductionism – good science or ideology?” An informal discussion seminar for a more detailed exploration of the ideas raised in the open lecture. 1600 hours in Room 300.08 . Chair: Arcadi Navarro from UPF-CEXS, Department of Evolutionary Biology.

Hi all,

A few requests and questions to finish the week.....

[1]. Next month, the El-lipse journal will announce the second edition of the PRBB Open Day Darwin-flavoured. We will take the opportunity to present the Science Meets Society new website.
This website (handled by Antonios) will contain informations concerning the open day.
Sooooo.... Could every subgroup write a short text briefly describing the point of their activity, and send it to Antonios (antonios...@crg.es) ? (Thanks!)

[2]. Now that Darwin Day and Open Day are grouped, is there a way to join the 2 google groups into one ?...This could avoid redundancies in the mails, and confusion in our communication. (I'm saying that....I don't know if someone is "administrator" of these 2 groups)

ABOUT SMS:

The SmS website (sms.prbb.org) will also have information about the other activities of SmS (not only the OD): scientific cafès, writing contest, etc. So, we would need info about these too! (Antonious I will send you the text for the writing contest now)

 

One question: will the website be in the three languages (cat, cast, eng)? We need to know in order to send the correct texts.

ABOUT Open Day:

Remember on March 26 we are having a general meeting with the PRBB and need to present the plan and a list of everything we need!!!!!! So I hope all the groups are meeting and organizing that! J

 

I’m also confused about the google groups sms-darwin and sms-open-day à can anyone who actually understands google groups check who is in each list and make a common one if poss? (Aurea could you do that? Or does anyone else volunteer?) I attach again a list of everyone who is involved in the Open Day in case you need it to check against the google groups and add people if they are missing. Then we should use that one for things that affect all subgroups (e.g. the meeting on the 26^th), while each subgroup will have their own mailing lists.
