See this! TALK AT COSMOCAIXA BY RICARD SOLE, FROM THE GRIB. I think we need to recruit him to do something for the Darwin exhibition! Talking about which:
It would be very useful to start a list of specific ideas we want to use (e,g, the butterflies example, etc. the Genographic Project at the UPF, etc.) and how we are going to use them, or contact person, etc. I have attached an excel with some examples that came to mind of things we’ve discussed but I know there’s more. Perhaps everyone can add the ideas they have? But the aim is to have more concrete ideas…!
If you add new things to this excel and send it to me I can compile all the ideas in one single excel… thanks!

Títol: Darwin entre les màquines: vida real, vida artificial
Conferenciant: Ricard V. Solé

Complexos de la UPF, Catedràtic Extern del Santa Fe Institute.
L'ús d'ordinadors per a simular els sistemes biològics ha
introduït la possibilitat d'imitar el comportament de
cèl•lules o organismes i inclús d'explorar la seva
evolució. El camp de l'anomenada Vida Artificial permet fer-se
preguntes fonamentals sobre la pròpia naturalesa d'allò que
està viu. Entre d'altres qüestions, permet apropar-se a
l'origen de la vida, el seu desenvolupament en formes complexes, al
paper que juguen els virus i altres paràsits, a la possible
síntesi de cèl•lules artificials i, fins i tot, al
desenvolupament de sistemes intel•ligents. Alguns investigadors
suggereixen inclús la possibilitat de desenvolupar una Història
Artificial en què es podrien simular els canvis a gran escala de les
societats. Explorarem tots aquests problemes sota el marc de la teoria
de l'evolució i veurem com la vida artificial permet comprendre
molts fenòmens alhora que obre noves preguntes sorprenents.

El gener del 2009, i per primera vegada a la història, un grup de
disCAPACITATS intentarà arribar al pol Sud, avançant pels seus
propis mitjans a través d'una de les zones més remotes,
fredes, ventoses i perilloses del nostre planeta: l'Antàrtida.
L'objectiu és demostrar la capacitat dels discapacitats.
Més enllà del component d'aventura i d'esport, Pol Sud
Sense Límits Obra Social "la Caixa" és també un repte
científic, ja que s'emmarca dins de l'Any Polar
Internacional, un ambiciós programa d'investigació de les
regions polars. Aquesta vessant científica consisteix en la recollida
de mostres en el transcurs dels 250 quilòmetres entre Patriot Hills i
el pol Sud, una oportunitat única per tal de conèixer millor les
característiques de l'Antàrtida.

Is this to discuss the Darwin reading chapters only? (if so, I'm afraid I won't go - can't be on everything!! I'm still interested perhaps in attending the readings, but not in organizing them...)
Or is it to discuss also the ideas we have so far for the Darwin exhibit? If it is for this, perhaps before meeting again you can all fill the excel I sent? Like that we will have them written down... otherwise we have a million meetings with a million ideas and nothing specific...
For example, Rui - you mention Roderic Guigó, Toni Gabaldón, Kondrashov, ... could you write in the excel sheet their names and what exactly is it that we could use from them? A specific idea?

Hi guys,
what about tomorrow meeting we need to organize the book chapter thing now! This is not related with the Darwin-Open day.
In case I did not explain myself in the last e-mail:
Ricard Solé, Luis Serrano, Kondrashov, Toni Gabaldon, Roderic Guigó and Cedric, at least, they all have many interesting outstanding evolutionary works......
So, there is not a single group working in evolution. And as I e-mailed Maruxa interviewing this people not for the Ellipse (once it is impossible) but for the audovisuals in Darwin day, like we did with Peter Bowler, would be interesting.
I think me and Urko can do it but let's discuss.
By the way, I looked at your excell file. All those names are in the Book chapters discussion as speakers!
So we have the same opinions. Cedric, Solé, Comas, Giraldez, lallueza, Kondrashov, etc

I'm sorry but I thought before Christmas we decided to keep this as an
activity and I was supposed to decide the chapters and speakers. That is
what is about this meeting. Define the date, the format, if we put some
coffe aavailable or something like that and invite the speakers. But of
course you do not have to come. We all have time constrains. I think we
will go to you anyway, to say if there is a corner in ellipse about this
activity and to put this in the webpage and maybe the breakfast before
the 12th.
Last time I forgot to go there and pick the P. Bowler interview. So, I
can try to get it and also we will fill the excel shit. No problem to
fill that. For instance, Toni Gabaldon is a new PI from CRG doing
comparative genomics and indeed he is the last person that asked to join
the darwin activities, so is much easier to go there here in the
corridor and ask directly on how he can contribute and invite him for
the book discussion also. I can do the same with Kondrashov because we
are in contact all the time.
The thing about this, is that there is no problem to write what I
know.....but I'm sure that when you or someone talk to them they will
tell you better what is more important in their work that is worth to
show. I think is ok if we have an idea of what they do....and I share
that, but when inviting them, they probably have a better idea of what
to show and what to show, at least we should give them an option that
fits with what we want. But this is just my opinion.
For the rest of the gang:
I have a meeting at 15 and another at 16.....maybe arround 17.30 is
finished.
Urko I think has classes until the 13.00
So, what about the everyone else?
We can meet either at 4th floor sofas ate the better time for everyone
(taking into acount the above restrictions). Other possibility is that
we go out somehwere at that time or later, have a beer, have a chat,
make decisions and that is it. Suggestions?

OK, I won't make it to today's meeting, but please do let me know once you have a definitive plan/timetable of the 'chapter readings' so I can publicize it in Ellipse or the prbb.net - no problem with that!
As per the other subject, of course we'll talk to people here at the PRBB who do things related to evolution and ask them what they want to collaborate with, as they will have a better idea than ourselves - I agree with that completely Rui, and as I said before there's no problem in you talking to them about it already.
What I mean is that for organisational purposes it's better to have all the ideas written in the excel (even if they are not defined, because it will be the scientists themselves who can specify better what they want/can do), just the contact names and a brief idea of what it is about. As we start talking to the scientists and they tell us what they want to do, we add these things to the excel.
This way we can keep track of the potential things we have and how they are advancing... If we need an exhibition in June there really is not that much time, and I think we need to start focusing on specific ideas!!
