Any body ever use one to get oil temp for deep fat frying?  How well did it work?

I'm thinking about buying one from Thermoworks for frying fish and fries.

I wouldn’t use an infrared thermometer for that. They are only good for surface temperature.

Infrared thermos are great tools.  I use mine to check my pit for hot spots, check for leaks around windows, etc.  Definitely agree that I would not use it for checking my oil temps when frying.  You will get a general idea, but not an accurate read at the surface.

I have this one but iv'e never tried it when deep frying, will check it out next time. have tried it when heating both milk and water and get some weird readings so may get the same results with oil.

Check out the thermal imaging equipment. I am thinking about using one to measure the cook by checking the thermal image of the meat. Hows that for overkill on tech?

I remember Gary Wiviott scolding me for having an oven thermometer on the top grate of my WSM.

You might use it on the outside of the container the oil is in. I don’t know how accurate it might be for the inside contents but it may be close. We have a neighbor who was planning to cook his turkey in an outside fryer for a thanksgiving. He checked the temp on the fryers thermometer, it was where he wanted, lifted the lid and it erupted.  He got the lid back on and checked the temp with an  infrared and it was way over where it was supposed to be.  He was lucky. Didn’t burn him, his house, or the deck it was under. Huge cloud of smoke and smelled like an electrical fire.

Putting a lid on a fryer is never a good idea at any time.  Mike

Putting a lid on a fryer is a great idea after the oil ignites...before that, maybe not such a good idea.
