Greetings from the Lower Ozarks

My old Foodsaver Vac 900,  (c) 2004, won't stop sucking.

It evacuates the bag fine in the vacuum and seal mode, but when it gets to the point where it should do the slow down and seal thing, it doesn't... keeps on keeping on.  If i hit the manual seal button it stops and seals, but some of the vacuum goes away.  End result, a loose package.

So now, I'm faced with replacing it.  It was a basic unit to begin with, but it served my needs.

So what replacement do y'all recommend for modest use?

As always, all advice is greatly appreciated.

Best Happy New Year wishes to all,
Phil in the Lower Ozarks

I have gone through several of the older top line machines and the only one still standing is a used gamesaver. That said I have a friend who has one one of the lower end models and it is still working. I have no experience with the new stand up machine. Before you give up on this one it might be fixed, first I would make sure the gaskets are OK, have you tried flipping them? Some treat them and I can't think of what they use at the moment, but it is associated with cleaning interiors of cars.  There is a foodsaver list that can be VERY helpful with ideas that can help you. If you can't find it I will post the address.

I have had very good luck calling the customer service number. They ask you to turn the machine on and try to seal a bag and they listen to the sounds it makes. Often they can tell you over the phone what the problem and/or fix is.

May or may not be your issue, but for me, when that happens it's because the opening isn't placed in the channel properly.  Usually too short.  Checking the placement of the opening might fix the problem.

Last year my kids bought me a pro style chamber vacuum sealer so I no longer need my Game Saver. It is the older silver model from Cabela’s and it has always worked very well. (I have heard that the newer Game Savers are not as good, but have no personal knowledge if this is true) It has fairly new gaskets and I have a new, unused set of gaskets for it. Write me off list if you would like to discuss purchasing it.
Having said that, from your description, it sounds like you may only need new gaskets to fix your old one. It sounds like it is leaking enough to prevent ever getting to the vacuum necessary to auto-seal.

Phil, I have the older Game Saver so Mike's deal, IMHO, would be a better buy if you can't get yours to work. BTW, I just remembered what they use to get the gaskets to work...Armour  All.

Mike, I appreciate the offer and advice.  I'm gonna monkey around with it to see if gaskets are the problem.

Thanks,
