This is a qroupon offer, has anyone heard of or uses this software? An $80 dollar program for $20.

<http://www.groupon.com/deals/dvo-enterprises-2?p=1&utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&sid=d942d019-1a69-48e6-845a-ff49131e2dd1&division=oklahoma-city&user=3655531a08154549926625e9c8765b996eadee14fe04c6bf7f538d0cbfdf93cb&date=20130106&s=body&c=deal_button&d=deal-page&utm_campaign=dvo-enterprises-2>

I have tried other software and it has been a pain to enter or capture recipes. So I have printed "note books" of recipes that are a pain to use, some of the video's demonstrating the software makes it seem easy to use.

Thanks!

Ok, I'm giving a reply to my question, I have gone on Amazon and overall it seems to have some great reviews:

<http://www.amazon.com/Cookn-Recipe-Organizer-Version-10/product-reviews/B0068M5ZCM/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1>

I would not pay the $70 bucks on Amazon, but for $20..............might be worth  a try.

John,
I have it, I love it, but I got mad at the creator (DVO).  I purchased version 7 and had a couple of free updates to 7.014.  About 8 months after my purchase they came out with version 8 and required a full retail price upgrade.  I quit upgrading at that point.  I don't mind the upgrades and even a small charge, but other recipe organizers do not require a full new purchase when they upgrade.  I know there were some complaints about continual cost, so they may not have continued this practice up to the current version 10.

My version is great for organizing, sharing recipes, developing menus, shopping lists and nutritional charts.  You can add photos of finished products, videos and notes as you go to show the progression of the recipe over time.  I would not say it is necessarily better than other recipe programs, but I have found it to be simple and quite helpful.  With all of my recipes in this format, I might look into this purchase at $20.  Probably time to do something...I was just noticing that my only option for exporting to an external device is "send to Palm"!

Thanks Merrill,

I think I remember your mentioning this problem before. I have looked at several video's on using it and explored the web site. It does seem that the original purchase gets you in the door and then there is a lot of offered plans for more money. I read a lot of the reviews and like all programs/products it seems to have lovers and haters.

I have also looked at the program Pam uses and recommends,Living Cookbook and it is rated #1 and DVO is rated #2. I have looked at some of the videos and downloaded a 30 day trial version of LC. I could not find a trial version of the DVO program. I think the DVO guarantee is a lot of smoke, at least that is what I gathered from  the Amazon reviews. But it would seem if you already have the program and like it, the $20 dollar price might be a good deal. There is something about the Amazon reviews on DVO that sounds fishy to me. There are several spread through out the comments about the owner fixing problems that seems strange. I know there are good and bad comments posted on some products that are not honest, but after reading enough you begin to get a feel for the phoney ones.

Maria,

Thanks for the link and I agree, for $20 bucks it is a good buy. I have been doing the same thing as you, copy the recipe and then clean it up in the e-mail.

I have been looking at the video's on Living Cookbook and you can also download recipes from the net using it. There seems to be two methods, one using cut and paste and the other with a one click download. But I think with the on click download it has to have been indexed already by LC, not sure on that............

John,
Thanks for bringing this groupon to our attention.  At $20, I'm putting in an order.  The other organizer options would let me export from what I'm using, but the price is great and I already know the system.  If you have been to the company history section of their site, you probably noted the whole folksy, family marketing complete with photos of Dan's kids.  They have kept this pitch going for many years.  I'm sure Dan's kids are much older now, but the 5 year old has more "mom appeal" than a snarky teenager! :)

As I remember the initial price was not a bargain, but it probably would seem ok based on todays prices.

There was an upgrade that I did not get because it seemed high for the benefits received. I got a upgrade later that was for a great price (can't remember more), all the other upgrades free or reasonably priced.

I believe this is third company selling Mastercook and it had some growning pains and it was never the company's money maker so some glitches were slow to be fixed.

Having tried other programs I have always returned to Mastercook. I like the present version.

Hey Melvin,
Thanks for the information.  MC is cheaper than Cook'n, but it sounds like they get their money out of you in the same way.  One nice feature of Cook'n is that they are family owned and have maintained the same owners since creation of the software.  The owner developed the software while in college at BYU, partly with the goal to assist Mormons with creating lists for their one year food supply.  My big college business idea didn't make it much beyond filing my DBA, so I am greatly impressed!

So far, I am not very impressed with the SW. You can import recipes from the Internet, but so far I don’t see how to import my Word Document files without converting them to HTML and importing them as a web page. Also, a little research has found that to convert from another cookbook format, you need to buy additional conversion software from them. They also probably make more money from selling recipe collections than from the program – sort of the theory of business pioneered by Gillette Safety Razor company – Sell the razor at a loss and make money on blades. HP fits that model to a T; they practically give away printers and make huge profits on ink cartridges.
I chose the 2011 annual as my free cookbook. Maybe those of us that buy the program can all get different cookbooks and trade them. Of course, that wouldn’t be completely legal, so I am just joking. Winking smile

Interesting. Mastercook was originally put out by Sierra and had great service, not only within the company but by great people online such as Terry Pogue and Glen Hosey and a few others. It was then sold to Valuesoft, and the Mastercook Forums disappeared. Who owns it now?

<http://www.groupon.com/deals/dvo-enterprises-2?p=1&utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&sid=d942d019-1a69-48e6-845a-ff49131e2dd1&division=oklahoma-city&user=3655531a08154549926625e9c8765b996eadee14fe04c6bf7f538d0cbfdf93cb&date=20130106&s=body&c=deal_button&d=deal-page&utm_campaign=dvo-enterprises-2>

I have tried other software and it has been a pain to enter or capture recipes. So I have printed "note books" of recipes that are a pain to use, some of the video's demonstrating the software makes it seem easy to use.

Thanks!

Maybe I’ll just stick to my old 3” X 5” recipe cards that I use an ink pen to write on them with, then put them in the recipe box with the rest of them. Then when I croak, my family and friends will have all my recipes. Seriously, when you think about all the computer crashes, etc., it really was the most reliable method.  :) And as far as converting…that’s what calculators are for!

I still like my Now Your Cooking, (NYC).
Been using it for 15-16 years. It is one of the few programs of any kind that I have actually paid for (you only pay once). Great customer service.

If memory serves me right, Arion orginally put out the program.

Bought by Serra who was then bought by ValueSoft. I think the first two gave the best customer support.

I am not sure how it works but ValueSoft was bought out or partnered with Cosmi I do not know which.

The present group says it will have an update in the spring but I am not sure they can add anything that I want let alone need.

Interesting. Mastercook was originally put out by Sierra and had great service, not only within the company but by great people online such as Terry Pogue and Glen Hosey and a few others. It was then sold to Valuesoft, and the Mastercook Forums disappeared. Who owns it now?

Can anyone recommend a decent recipe app for the iPad? Master Cook
doesn't have one for it, and there seem to be major problems with any
others I've found.

Hi there,

I read Gmail on my iPad all the time ! Perhaps you may need to adjust a setting or two?
Apps for recipes I like:
Free (which I REALLY like)
Epicurious and Gourmet Live are nice

For a Price:
Jamie Oliver's 20 min. melas is supposed to be good, although I've not used it
and
Weber on the Grill (I know, I know - but it's a fun one! and only $4.99...)

Huh! I wonder why that is. I have no problems reading my Gmail on my
iPad. It was as easy to set up, IIRC, as my Comcast.net addresses. Why
would you only get the headers? Gerry?

I'm partly with you Kurt.  I do print out my recipes and keep them in a book.  I've been through many computers and experienced data loses, but I still have my grandmothers and great grandmother's recipe file.  Mine won't be in my handwriting, but that's fine since no one would ever be able to read them.  All of my family have Cook'n.  We did this many years ago to simplify a joint family cookbook.  I probably would not have recipes from my siblings if we hadn't come up with this idea.  You can share with other organizers , but this just happened to be what my mom chose.

Actually Sierra didn't develop Mastercook, they bought it from the original developers. I had a copy of Version 1.0. It came on a single 3.5" floppy disc. The forums are still around as Yahoo groups.

I have hundreds, perhaps thousands of recipes stored on my computer. Many have paper backups, and many do not. Since I have over 1000 hours invested in transcribing written recipes into the computer, I make multiple backups every month, including burning them to DVDs. I like to print out a paper copy to take into the kitchen. If it gets wet or I spill ingredients on it, I simply throw it away. My wife still has her recipes in a box and many of them are faded or dirty and almost impossible to read. I have been trying to get her to type them into the computer for preservation. I have OCR software that I have used for importing recipes, but many of hers are in such poor condition that OCR would not work. Mine are organized by their source with sub headings for pork, beef, etc. Many are in Word documents and many are in .mht format (web page) I was hoping that Cook’N could import them for a better organization, but so far, I don’t see a way to do that. At least $20 is not a lot to waste.

My Son gave me a Kindle Fire HD for Christmas, he woulda got me a Nexus, BUTT they was out.
Way back yonder when Big Oven was coming out I signed up on it. I was looking for a cookbook app for the Fire and there was Big Oven app. I put it on the tablet. Claims to have 250,000 recipes. I just type something in the search bar and BOOM a bunch of recipes come up for what I typed in. Kinda cool.
I keep my recipes in NYC, BUTT usual when I need a hint I hit GOOGLE and pick what looks best, easy and simple. If I like it I save as word doc and when I get a chance I move it to NYC. About all you got to do is remember to put @@@@@ at the start and an empty line after it. Most of the time I pick out the ingredients and directions and name, BUTT it will import without doing even that.

Bill, I believe Scot is referring to software to store his own recipe collection.

I use MacGourmet. There's versions for Mac and "i" devices. They sync between each other. You can import recipes from websites, import from other programmes or enter your own. The software can generate nutritional information and shopping lists. I really like it.

Well here is the joke for our Christmas. My son got his oldest son(8 years old) a kindle for Christmas, but they usually give their big gifts by way of a scavenger hunt. So after several clues he ends up in their van with a  bundle of sticks and the paper attached says  "Kindle Fire (Wood). The grandson didn't think it was funny and went pouting to his bedroom, but came out later when the gifts started being opened, and he did find a Kindle in the pile.  A big start to his morning!

P.S. the boy will probably be scarred for life!!!!!!!!

Sorry Scot and Jack. I led you astray. The "i" device versions of MacGourmet  are only useful when you run MacGourmet on your Mac.

I didn't really think about this because I used MacGourmet for many years on my Mac before adding it to my iPhone and iPad. You can't enter recipes into MacGourmet for iPad or iPhone. You have to put them into the Mac version and then sync.

To Jack - Sorry this is the only recipe software I've used. I've never tried anything else.
