Greetings.

Mayor Adrian Fenty has signed Councilmember Jack Evans' "emergency" legislation, which would create a temporary exemption to the smokefree workplaces law for two events (see details at www.SmokefreeDc.org).

We are quite disappointed. It is shameful that the mayor, who was one of our biggest supporters when he was on the Council, has acted against worker health and for Council cronyism.

However, we still have one last chance to help those who have to work those events: We have asked the Hilton to tell the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick that the hotel will not permit smoking at the Friendly Sons' event, despite what the Council says.

But we need your help to persuade the Hilton to do the right thing. Please encourage the Hilton to tell the Friendly Sons that they must go outside to smoke their cigars, as everyone else in the city does.

You can call the Hilton at 202-639-5717 or email michael_...@hilton.com. He is the director of catering.

Thanks so much for your support.
