Greetings.
D.C. Councilmember Jack Evans' request to poke a permanent hole in the smokefree workplaces law is up for a hearing before the Health Committee this coming Monday, March 8, at 2 p.m. in Room 120 of the Wilson Building.
Please consider testifying against the measure. It's really important that the Council understand the dangers of weakening our very solid and successful smokefree bill. If you would like to testify, here's how to do it:

If you can't testify, please contact the members of the Health Committee, who are David Catania, Yvette Alexander, Mary Cheh, Marion Barry and Tommy Wells. Contact information is at

Please tell them that:
- Workers should not have to choose between their health and a paycheck. That is a key principle underlying the smokefree workplaces law, and this measure would erode that
- This would set a terrible precedent. It would open the door for other organizations or businesses to seek a break for themselves - for this or any other law
- It smacks of cronyism. This came about because Jack Evans is a member of the Friendly Sons of Ireland, which wants to smoke cigars at its St. Patrick's Day event. Granting this request tells the electorate that laws can be broken by friends of Councilmembers, and that the Council doesn't take seriously the laws it passes. That's just wrong.
