Greetings.

We need your help. The D.C. Council has weakened the smokefree workplaces law, and we need you to contact Councilmembers and urge them to undo the damage.

During a final vote on the budget in mid-June, a measure was introduced that purportedly permitted cigar-smoking at just two events annually. However, the language that was approved was much broader and permits annual cigar-smoking events at 79 hotels. Some councilmembers now say they didn't mean to open such a big hole in the law.

The Council is planning to scale back the exemptions on July 12 to what they were originally meant to be - for two events. However, even weakening the law for just two events is bad policy. The public isn't clamoring for it and it will still harm hotel workers.

Please let the Council know how much you like the smokefree law and how important it is that it remains intact.

Thanks for your support.

Sincerely,

Your friends at Smokefree DC
