Greetings.

We have a few important things to tell you about today:

ALA DC Closes. The American Lung Association's DC chapter is being shut down by the ALA's national office, along with ALA chapters in Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina. This is a loss, especially considering the cessation work done recently through ALA DC and the progress the tobacco control community has made in the District to reduce smoking rates. Also, ALA DC may be one of the oldest nonprofits in the District. Read more about the closing. The better news is that the Quitline will still be run out of United Medical Center by some of ALA DC's folks. Whether it continues past September is an open question. Read more about that here.

Secondhand Smoke Wars: Kassi's Story. This is the story of a determined landlord and her husband, and how they prevailed against an apartment of smokers. The saga involved the property management company, condo board (which held a meeting and a hearing about the case), two property owners, a contractor, one attorney and multiple residents of the building. You can read Kassi's story here.

Smokefree Law Update. Want to know which states have smokefree laws that cover bars and restaurants, in addition to workplaces? How about what percentage of the U.S. population is covered by indoor smokefree air laws? Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights, which does a terrific job of keeping track of every last smokefree law and proposal throughout the country, has updated its great maps and lists.

Thanks for your support.
