Is the Manage...@SmokeFree.net list still active? Did everyone but me get the message (below my signature) announcing all lists on smokefree.net will end soon, and that the managers on this list need to sign ourselves up on a new Managers-talk listserver on Google groups?

How long before all lists on www.SmokeFree.net stop working? Has a date been set when they will stop working?

How should we "cancel" or delete lists from this listserver after we have moved the list(s) we manage to another listserver like Google Groups?
Will the messages on these lists continue to be accessible for some time after the lists stop working?
When will the archives be deleted?

I am not getting all messages sent to the Manager-talk list in my email inbox - at least not if I can believe what is on the smokescreen.org website message list for this Manager-talk list.

Thanks,
Mark

Moving Smokefree Lists < PREVIOUS | 245707 | NEXT >

We're in the process of closing down the Smokefree.Net listserv's. There are
many reasons for this, but the biggest one is that it's no longer the best
option out there for tobacco control activists. The list software is about 10
years old, and while incremental improvements have been made during that time,
it's showing its age. Systems such as Google Groups and Yahoo Groups are free
and offer things like digest email, an integrated calendar, polling, files,
better archive searching, best list management, and spam filtering.

The first list I'm moving over is this one, the list of list managers. If you
still have a list hosted on smokefree.net, or you want to start one, you'll
definitely want to join, it'll be the support area for moving. My
recommendation is to move your list to Google Groups, let me know the group
name, then I'll work with you to do the transition.

There are a few ways to move your group over. You can create the group, then
send a message to everyone on your list asking them to go to a web page and add
their email adress. The huge advantage of this is that people can add the email
address they want to use, not some email address that only sometimes works, or
is old, etc.

The other way is to take your current list and add their email addresses to an
invitation list. This will send them an email inviting them to join your group,
which they do by simply clicking on a link. The big advantage is that it's
really easy, one click and they're on. This is great for announcement lists,
but for lists where people post messages (a discussion list), it could be a
problem if the email addresses don't match exactly.

Finally, you can add people's email addresses directly to your group.
However, you can't do that unless you know the person and they want to be on the
list. If Google gets too many complaints about you adding people that don't
want to be on the list, they will disable your group, so that option should be
used very sparingly.

For this list, I'm going to choose option one, and ask you to add yourself to
the new Smokferee Administratrors list by going to

                http://www.smokefree.net/manager-talk/

And adding your email. See you over on that list!

To get started moving your own list, go to http://groups.google.com. You'll
need a Google login (free), but your list subscribers won't need that, all they
need is an email.
