Dear Smith School Community:

It is with mixed emotions that I inform you that Dr. Joyce E. A. Russell has been appointed as The Helen and William O'Toole Dean of the Villanova University School of Business, effective Aug. 1, 2016. We are of course thrilled for Joyce that she will have this great opportunity to lead the Villanova School of Business. As Villanova University President Peter M. Donohue noted in a news release today, “Dr. Russell’s proven track record as a visionary leader make her a perfect fit to lead the Villanova School of Business into its next great chapter. Dr. Russell is a true teacher scholar, who has been recognized for her teaching and research, as well as her commitment to service. We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Russell to the Villanova community and look forward to continuing to see the School of Business thrive under her leadership.” Joyce will lead a school that has approximately 2,700 undergraduate and graduate students, 128 faculty, 50 staff members and an alumni body of nearly 30,000.

Joyce will continue to work with the Smith School through July to help transition her many activities and duties. We will let you know about a celebration in her honor this summer. In the meantime, I would like to thank Joyce for her outstanding years of service to the Smith School. Since joining the Management and Organization faculty in 1998, she has consistently been a Top 15 Percent Outstanding Teacher every semester while she was teaching. She also won the Allen J. Krowe Award three times, won the prestigious UMD Faculty Advisor of the Year for the entire campus, received a Ford Foundation Grant in the State of Maryland for four years, was recognized by the national Society for Human Resource Management as one of the top 10 faculty advisors in the United States, and won MBA accolades for the Best Course (Negotiations).

Joyce also continued to publish scholarly journal articles, book chapters and a bestselling human resources management textbook. She has presented her research at national professional conferences and has served on professional editorial boards. In addition, she brought substantial media exposure and impact to the Smith School. She was consistently rated as one of the top faculty for top-tier placements in the media. This was due to her popular Washington Post column as the “Career Coach,” where she has written approximately 40 to 45 articles per year since April 2010, and conducted a monthly online chat. She also secured visibility for the Smith School through Maryland Public Television interviews, board positions with GMAC, MBA Roundtable and the National Association of Women MBA, and numerous keynote addresses and workshops at events with organizations such as the Forté Foundation and EMBA Council. In addition, Joyce was one of the most active faculty experts teaching in the Smith School’s Office of Executive Programs.

She served as Vice Dean for three years, and most recently she served as Senior Associate Dean of Learning. Perhaps more than anything, Joyce’s impact has most significant on our students. Besides teaching at every campus in graduate and undergraduate programs, she voluntarily led workshops and prepared numerous webinars for students and alumni. As a self-identified “zealot for students” — she worked to ensure that they had the negotiations and leadership training necessary for success in their personal and professional lives. Similarly, she has been a key champion for faculty and staff in the Smith School Leadership Academy.

As noted earlier, we will celebrate Joyce’s many contributions and wish her well in her new position at a special event later this summer. Stay tuned for more details.
