Guys

Let me do the honors of creating first discussion. From the admit/wl
excel i gather most of us are still undecided on joining Smith.

I will like to know what are the factors you guys are evaluating in
making your decision.

As for me --

Following are the criteria i am evaluating -

1. Cost - I think i am not getting any "discounts" from school so 60
lac investment seems huge. I think i may be able to afford it but not
sure if its worth it.

2. Age - I am 29 and i think this is the last shot i have to do MBA.

3. Job prospects - (this is least of my concerns - i know this sound
stupid but i have my reasons to be arrogant here) - Still need to dig
deeper and go beyond my target companies to understand the whole
recruiting landscape.

guys, feel free to pitch in on your views and your thought process
while making your decision.

Cheers..

Hey Abhinav

Thanks for starting this thread and thanks to Ankit for starting this
group.

First off I am still waiting for the Scholarship and GA news, fingers
crossed :-).
So if anyone has some news on this please share it. I have been trying
to contact the adcomm but they have not replied to any of my mails. I
want to know whether they have finalized all scholarships and GA or
no.

Secondly has anyone recieved the admissions packet or deposit
information, deadlines etc?

Third I recieved an email from:

University of Maryland College Park
Enrollment Service Operations
Application for Admission
College Park, MD 20742

They have requested for some kind of bank statements and documents. I
am absolutely clueless on what they want us do. So if anyone has the
idea do let me know. I have emailed the adcomm regarding the same but
again no replies :-(.

Now as far my indecision to join Smith is concerned it stems from the
fact that for me Smith is expensive.
I have around 42 months of work ex and I got a score of 710. My
interview also went fine and I was hopeful and expecting some of kind
of scholarship or graduate assitantship. I have heard that there are a
lot of G.A.s on offer at the campus for which we can apply. If anyone
has some information on that please shed some light. It would help me
a lot.

Hello Shantanu,

Perhaps they are waiting for confirmation from student's end on who all will be joining, and may later transfer their GA/schol to the ones still waiting for a decision. Even I am waiting for the admission packet, it's been a long time and it shudv reached us by now.

I am planning to make the deposit in a day or two :)

Hey guys,

Sorry for the late reply.
Work pressure has been killing me lately :)

My profile-
GMAT 710
Work Ex - 4.5 yrs in IT

I've been awarded with GA for the 1st year.

The only reason I'm still undecided abt Smith is the placement scenario for the 2nd years.
The situation looks to be quite bleak at present for the desis out thr.

So I just want to weigh my options before I make my decision.
I have not received my admissions packet yet, but I'm hoping our deposit deadline is in April so that we dont have to rush in.

The DC region does not seem to be very job-friendly for the internationals.
ny1 else who have done some research on this?

Regards,
Sagar

Guys

Thanks for sharing your point of view and updates.

Just to let you know that i mailed admissions committee day before
yesterday asking about the same details - admission award declaration,
admission packet and deposit detail and timelines. It seems everyone
is quite busy at smith may be due to exams, admit student weekend,
admission interviews etc. etc. At this point in time all we can do is
be patient.

Also, Just to let you know that i got a call from 1st year student
yesterday afternoon (2.30pm Singapore time - 1.30 am EST). I think
admission committee is too busy to give a congratulatory call so asked
a student to make the call. Actually it was good to receive call from
him - his profile: Chinese, studied and worked in Singapore and for
sometime in China before moving to Smith - as i was able to ask more
specific question about his experience at Smith so far and he shared
information at length about the opportunities in class. I also asked
him about activities outside class and he shared where all he is
involved and other opportunities present at Smith.

I also asked him about internships and final job scenario at Smith.
According to him, things are looking good for internships (he is doing
his internship in Israel) and people in his section are able to find
internships of their choice. In his words "Things are looking bright
for internships". For final job placements, he didn't had much idea so
he will connect me with someone from career services. Bottom line
remains that its hard work on the individual to get internship and job
placement...school will facilitate and i think thats fair.

I hope that we get more information from adcom after admit student
weekend.

Cheers..

Hi Ankit

So you mean the date to make the deposit is out. I did not know about
it, Can u share the URL of the page where this information is
mentioned.

They haven't sent any mail regarding the deposit, this is very
confusing. So all of us have to make the deposit by 15th March. I feel
they should have sent an email regarding the same.

Shantanu

I think 15th march is for R1 admits. I agree they should have
mentioned that in the admit email or on website.

Check out admit student website. Last i checked they didnt updated any
last dates for deposit.

ya thats right. Ankit is an R1 admit that is why his deposit date is in March.
Considering that I think our deposit dates would be in April.

So I don't think we need to worry too much about it yet. In any case, looks like thrs nothing much that we can do.

-AdCom doesn't reply to emails or takes calls
-No info on the admit students' website
-No one has received the admissions packet

Hello All,

I am an R2 admit with GA for 1 year. Does anybody know what is the
approx. cost for two years? My calculation is coming out to be 40
lacs. approx. Just wanted to verify.

According to what I've been told.
1k per month should cover for all your expenses other than your tuition fee

the monthly break up is:
Rent -  700 (on sharing basis)
Food - 100-200
Misc. - 100-200

Total  900 - 1100

Travel Expense would not be needed as most of the students live within walking distance of the campus
Health Insurance will be covered by the GA

So typically your monthly stipend from the GA should cover for most of your expenses.

Sagar

Just one difference ...
Rent is around 1200-1300/month for a 2bhk house (2 bed room+living+2 bath)
So, on sharing basis, i.e. 4 ppl share the place then...
Per Person it would be around 325 + another 50 for utilities such as cable, net, electricity

Hi All,

I have decided to join Smith School and looking forward to meeting you
guys.

Have you guys started deciding on the accomodation and travel?
What date are you guys planning to head to DC?

Also are all of you done with your visa interviews?
I am an R3 admit and just recently decided to join the program.
Any idea how after how much time does the university mail the I-20
form (after accpeting the admission offer)?

Sandesh

I think Shashikant is also missing from the excel.

As we get into the final phase of this transition, lets keep the spreadsheet updated and try to get this group more active which i am sure it will be in coming days.
