ShanghaiPRIDE 2010′s exhibition in the gaybourhood will take place in Eddy’s, Shanghai Studio and Transit Lounge. It consists of two key components: a series of oil paintings by gay Chinese artist Xi Peng, and a photo exhibition from the Hello Comrade campaign.

Hello Comrade is an Internet-powered campaign led by 23 year old fresh graduate, Hou Haiyang, of Changchun, Jilin Province. It all began with a simple idea: Hou wanted to capture smiles from straight people on camera and send it to all of China’s gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. He soon started the Smile4Gay, also known as the Hello Comrade (Tongzhi Nihao!) project and used social networking sites like Douban and Sina to ask straight netizens to upload pictures of themselves smiling with a message of encourage to the gays and lesbians of China. Meanwhile, he also asked for volunteers across China to hit the streets and ask passersby if they would be happy to join in the campaign. More than 600 volunteers signed up — from Beijing and Shanghai to Inner Mongolia, Sichuan, Yunnan, and even Hong Kong. They took to the streets with their cameras, whiteboards and educational pamphlets and the result has been astounding. To date, Hello Comrade has received 4,565 images from around the world and counting. Many of these pictures, including many shot on the streets of by Hello Comrade’s Shanghai volunteers, will be exhibited in Shanghai Studio and Transit Lounge for the duration of ShanghaiPRIDE 2010 in what is Hello Comrade’s longest exhibition to date.

Xi Peng is a 33 year old Chinese artist who has been painting gay-themed works since he was in university. Many of his works, on display at Eddy’s and Shanghai Studio for the duration of ShanghaiPRIDE 2010, are being exhibited for the very first time. Xi believes that through art, he can give the gay community a voice, and to build a bridge for mainstream society to come understand gay people. He hopes that through his works, society can gain a window into the life of the oft-invisible gay community, and in this way build understanding and compassion in society. His motto in life is: to love others is to love one self.
