Science Inside Out 2015 (AKA SMERFCON II: SMERF harder)

An afternoon of skills-based training and discussion for in-house science communicators

When: Weds 25 November 2015. 1pm – 5pm, with drinks and networking afterwards.

Where: Upstairs at The Angelic, 57 Liverpool Rd, London N1 0RJ http://www.theangelic.co.uk/

Cost: £15 per person.

What is it?

An afternoon workshop focusing mainly on practical issues around communicating science to the public.

What will it cover?

There will be four plenary sessions covering a range of topics that are likely to be of interest.

• Keynote: Royal Society Winton Book Prize winner and experienced science writer Gaia Vince, in conversation about writing, features, science communication etc.

• Writing great headlines and sparkling copy (speaker tbc)

• Digital content and rich media (Dan Gluckman, Wellcome Trust, plus others tbc)

• Who am I doing this for? Targeting content to different audiences (‘A SMERFWIG show and tell' group discussion)

Who is it for?

This workshop is aimed at in-house science communicators working for organisations that fund and/or do any kind of scientific research.

Who is it not for?

This workshop is very specifically focused on issues affecting in-house science communicators working for research organisations. It won’t be suitable for practising scientists or PhD students, freelance journalists or more general organisational press/PR officers.

Is it for me?

Do you spend most of your time at work communicating science, particularly the research your organisation does/funds for the general public or other audiences? And does the word “signoff” send a shiver down your spine? If so, then it probably is.

Who’s organising it?

SMeRF-WIG – the Science and Medical Research Funders Writers (In-house) Group - a group of in-house science writers and communicators drawn from a wide range of organisations including the Wellcome Trust, the Research Councils, Cancer Research UK, Imperial College London and more.

How much will it cost and how many people are going?

We hope to get around 40 people and it will cost £15 per person to cover room hire, tea and coffee, at least a round of drinks afterwards, and speaker expenses.

Sounds great! How do I book?
