Hi everyone
Thanks for coming yesterday, just wanted to share some of the links we looked at:
http://www.childofmine.wateraid.org/ - thanks for sharing Becca!
http://www.nytimes.com/projects/2012/snow-fall/#/?part=tunnel-creek
http://neomam.com/interactive/13reasons/
https://ihatetomatoes.net/happy-25th-birthday-game-boy/
http://poppyspend.britishlegion.org.uk/
Mun-Keat has a lot more and I think there might be notes somewhere amongst the group!
I’ve not shared the links to the BHF ones because (except the 2014 annual review one) they’re not public yet but can send round the final versions when they’re up.
Looking forward to the POST Smerf-wig at Westminster!
Cheers
Ben

Discussion: Scrolly scrolly!
There is a big trend to make websites that visitors have to scroll through to read or engage with, whether that is scrolling down the page to read a feature, or scrolling to make an animation proceed. Despite their apparent popularity with digital publishing companies, there are some issues for us if we are thinking about making one.
For example:
What shelf life does scrolls scrolls have, especially if they are hard to update?
Accessibility? Do they work on old versions of Internet Explorer…?!
How does the reader know what is clickable?
Ben (BHF) shared some in-house projects using scrolly formats.
BHF scrolly link (we saw two other projects that are not yet public)
There are a number of free and paid platforms for building scrolly websites. Immersive (used by BHF for one of their projects) is a free version of a service called Shorthand, used by the BBC and the Guardian.
Scrolly platforms
But while these platforms can help you make whizzy content, do we know the analytics? Has anyone ever read through one of these the whole way?! Do the whistles and bells distract the ardent reader? Is it anything more than “the new audio slideshow”?
Mun-Keat (Wellcome Trust) spoke about Mosaic’s presence on Medium, a blogging platform referred to as "Tumblr for grown-ups" by some of us! There are lots of longform articles on Medium - it’s well-suited to it. Fold is a new platform, developed by MIT, but we can't really see the point of it; Atavist is nice, has features like timelines, audio files (speech/music)...
Wellcome Trust scrolly links
digitalstories.wellcomecollection.org/pathways/1-mindcraft/1-mesmer
It is easy to get lost (not always in a good way) in these immersive features. Navigation aids are important, whether a site ‘map’, timelines, a mountain, etc...
Non-Smerf organisations’ scrolly links
https://ihatetomatoes.net/happy-25th-birthday-game-boy/
poppyspend.britishlegion.org.uk
www.nytimes.com/projects/2012/snow-fall/#/?part=tunnel-creek

pitchfork.com/features/cover-story/reader/bat-for-lashes/
www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2014/10/25/chasing-bayla/.../story.html
In conclusion: these scrolling websites look cool, but we are not sure they are actually useful. Tools abound for doing them relatively cheaply (compared to the reputed $1million it took the New York Times to make Snowfall), but make sure you have a story to tell and that you know why you want to engage people at this depth.
Next meeting:
Henry (POST) to host at the Houses of Parliament in July.
Bonus topic: Smerfcon II
Not discussed in any detail, but there was some positive discussion on the email list some time ago about organising another half-day conference for Smerfwig this year, and if it is going to happen, people will soon have to step up and volunteer to take on the following roles:
Core admin team, including someone to act as treasurer, to organise date, venue and marketing (3 or 4 people)
Content organisers (at least 4 people, 1 (or more) for each session if we follow the same format as 2014)
Perhaps part of the next meeting could be set aside to decide on content and for volunteers to come forward! In the meantime, please start putting forward session ideas over the email list.
These notes are great – thanks Michael!

Morning team,
Just working out one of the long-standing things on my to do list: filming consent forms. Does anyone have an example of one you could share with me? We've pulled something together, but any examples of best practice would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Ben

This is also nice. Not seen a navigation tool like this before.
Nice, I do like the hexagon spinner thinger at the side. As you say, a novel way to navigate.
Think you mean our Annual Review page…
Here’s the new one: http://annualreview.bhf.org.uk/
Sadly that one “Big Change” is now gone! Perhaps there’s a way to see a cached version…
