Next SMC Mumbai Event: Social Media for Photographers

Hey guys,

I'm happy to announce that thanks to some great ideas from the people that attended the last casual meet at Mocha Mojos - we're pretty close to announcing the next event.

We wanted to do something that'll get some good numbers (attendance) and is targeted to a specific type of people. We're looking at targeting the next event to photographers.

Topic: How Photographers can use Social Media to promote their talent

Format/Agenda:

1) Speaker (Paromita Deb Areng) who will make a brief presentation on how she's used Social Media and how it has helped her. 

2) This will be followed by an open interactive discussion amongst the audience (photographers + social media professionals + students) to discuss questions and comments about Social Media

Tentative Venue: Mithibai College, Vile Parle (West) (We're open to doing this at the Canon venue in case it's available)

Tentative Date and Time: Saturday, 25th September 2010.

Here's what I wanted from everyone - I needed ideas on how we can promote this event - apart from our standard outreach mechanism of FB, Twitter and Google Group Emails. 

We've just touched base with Canon - and we'll see how that goes although they only do outreach for events that happen at their own venue at Worli (which is ok with us but they're booked all through September).

Ideas?

Ideas beyond FB

1. Flickr group postings for Mumbai
2. Reaching out via Canon Edge forum postings
3. Photography groups on FB, Orkut etc.
4. Reaching out to prominent photo-bloggers directly (think though this might be already done)

We have a fan page with around 16-17k fans called Photography Tips.. it's a client's property but even they're associated with Canon, so maybe we can put up an update there or share an event. Will let you know if they're cool with promoting this and then we can use the forum, its a good base to promote, all photography enthusiasts.

I think he means reaching out to photowalking groups - Flickr is a good source for such groups

1. I know the editor of Better Photography. Lemme see how I can sell this to him. And get him to write about us, put up pictures or something. Any selling points (hard numbers) e.g.

• We will reach out to these many people
• These many photographers will attend etc. 

I can probably come up with metrics on the online reach. 

2. Push this in my database of photographers. This can be promoted a really cool Photography 2.0 thing. 

3. I say we use the college as a venue. Good readymade base of interested junta amongst the students which can further spread the word and are also potential club members

4. I have the 9 NMIMS colleges as a client. And can push this amongst that base too, I guess.

We are having the meet at Mithibai, the venue is confirmed. Maybe you can start speaking to your client [Feels weird to say 'your client' and not 'our client' :D ]

All the other ideas seem good. Do you need anything from our side to start working on them?

Looks like we're all set to go. I'm pretty excited about this one.

@Aditya @Maneesh - Can you guys please talk to your respective clients - let's start promoting this event by the first week of September - so we can build enough enthusiasm. 

@Ankita - Should we start talking to Paromita on a regular basis? (2wice in a week or more) to ensure that she's on track with her presentation.

Does anyone have any ideas on how we can make the 2nd session - which will be an open discussion with everyone - more productive in terms of having a Q and A session with people, etc.

P.S. I was just looking at some of her photographs earlier and IMHO they kick ass.
