I have missed being able to ride down US 1 and was excited when it was announced that it was open South of Big Sur. I mentioned that I was going to be in Cambria to my Southern California sister, Joan, who wanted to introduce me to New Boyfriend (actually they have been dating for quite a while) so the two of them decided to share my campsite.

Rode down on Friday. Hwy 92 to Half Moon Bay and then left onto 1 and stayed there. Stopped at Gayle's Bakery, well worth a stop. Nice sunny day. Got gas in Gorda by the Sea -over nine dollars and fifty cents a gallon. Grr. Onwards to San Simeon. Found the turnoff, signed in with the ranger and found the campsite, already occupied by Joan and Glenn with a huge tent and all sorts of food. Was greeted by the resident overly friendly ground squirrels and very forwards starlings and towhees. Pleasant evening with lots of stars.

Next day was overcast. The three of us went for a hike and were immediately covered with ticks, despite tick repellent. We got back to the road, double checked for ticks, and walked down the road to the newly constructed boardwalk to the beach. Wandered around the beach a bit, then went back. Marco and Paul turned up, then a group led by Harry around some truly challenging roads. It started drizzling a bit, then stopped, then started again. Evening was spent around a campfire, listening to a Grateful Dead tape. Quite pleasant, despite drizzle, until a self-proclaimed ax murderer invited himself into the campsite. I turned in after that.

Next morning I packed up and rode home via 46 and 101. Uneventful except for the usual pockets of bumper to bumper traffic. There was one incident: I filled up in San Ardo. There was another rider there on an Africa Twin. We exchanged greetings, and I took off while the Africa Twin person finished up his Gatorade. He came up behind me a few miles later, passed and made the "CHP in vicinity" sign. I looked in rearview mirrors and there was a sheriff, right behind him, who got in front of me and pulled Africa Twin over. Ouch. I kept going and about 20 miles later there he was again, weaving in and out of traffic. We waved.

Glad you had a nice trip and the rain cooperated for the most part. Hopefully the weather holds for the other riders returning tomorrow too.

My friends had a lovely wedding yesterday in Golden Gate Park.

Terry made attending a lot more complicated as he was bitten by a friend of his on our Friday morning walk and needed sedation and stitches to be patched up. With his new cone, he couldn't fit in his kennel, so I ended up having to bring him along using the car as a kennel instead.

If only I'd signed up for pet insurance when I moved my car insurance over to Lemonade last week...

For those of you that didn't make the trip (and even those of you that did) there's a nice NY Times article about Hwy 1 with pictures and videos of various spots along the way. Let me know if it is behind a pay wall and you can't read it.

Thanks Mike and Randy! We did stop at Nepenthe, and I could not help but think of Kim Novak dancing on the outside deck of her home where we sat sipping coffee.
The one thing I missed along the route there, were the zebras on the Hearst property. Normally mixed in among the cattle grazing, I was not able to spot them this year.

Thanks Mike! True to form, I didn't see any of the attractions mentioned in the article, except the elephant seals
