With the Wiimote, players are able to swing around the Caliburn sword to attack enemies, as well as defending themselves.[4][6][7] While travelling through the levels, the player interacts with various fairies which take the attribute of traditional Sonic items, such as springs and speed pads; yellow fairies give the player one to twenty rings, blue fairies increase the player's speed and jump height, and red fairies increases the "Soul Gauge", allowing the player to unleashed a homing Soul Surge attack when filled.[8][9] Beating stages with a higher rank gives the player better rewards,[6] which can be brought to the blacksmith (Tails) to create new, or upgrade old equipment.

A wizard named Merlina, granddaughter of Merlin, attempts to flee from a black knight and his forces. Cornered, she performs a spell calling forth a champion to save her, summoning Sonic the Hedgehog. As they retreat, Merlina explains to Sonic that the black knight is actually King Arthur, who has been corrupted by the immortality granted by Excalibur's scabbard, and that Sonic must defeat him to restore peace to the kingdom. With Sonic's speed alone being insufficient to defeat the King, he takes up the talking sacred sword Caliburn. At Caliburn's suggestion, Sonic meets up with the Lady of the Lake, Nimue (Amy Rose), who tests Sonic to prove he is a worthy Knight. After completing her tasks, Nimue tells him that he must collect the other sacred swords wielded by Lancelot, Gawain, and Percival of the Round Table in order to dispel the immortality granted by Excalibur's scabbard. Defeating each of the Knights, Sonic claims all three swords and challenges the King once more, destroying him.

During early development, Sega held focus testing in the U.S. to choose the most popular characters from the legend to be used in-game, with the artists adding various attributes of knights to their appearance. This included Blaze the Cat, despite Percival being a male, hence why she is never referred to as "Sir Percival".[10] Like Secret Rings, Sonic and the Black Knight uses the PhysX physics engine, while art director Yoshitaka Miura opted to style the game after Unleashed, unlike the more realistic style of recent games. Yuji Uekawa handled the cutscenes, basing them off the art direction of its predecessor. Katano noted that development was relatively smooth, since they were already aware of the Wii's capabilities after developing Secret Rings.[10]

Sonic heads off to see Nimue, the Lady of the Lake (Amy's counterpart) and previous owner of the scabbard of Excalibur, to find out how to stop the Black Knight; on his way, he encounters and defeats Lancelot (Shadow's counterpart), one of the Knights of The Round Table, and claims his sword. The Lady reveals that she will only assist Sonic when he becomes a true knight and presents him with three tests to be completed in three days. After completing them, Sonic soon encounters a crying child whose village was abducted by a dragon and decides to help her. Sonic soon encounters and defeats Gawain (Knuckles' counterpart) and takes his sword before he can kill himself out of shame with it, asking him if there is more to being a knight than serving a king. With the townsfolk saved, Nimue reveals that she was the crying child and was testing Sonic, and that he can blunt the scabbard's power by retrieving the sacred swords wielded by the Knights of the Round Table. Afterwards, Sonic meets Percival (Blaze's counterpart) and defeats her before saving her from falling from a cliff, an act that finally earns him Caliburn's respect and the title of "Knight of the Wind". Merlina has seen those events from her reflecting pool and arrives to inform Sonic that the Black Knight is on Faraway Avalon. Sonic and Caliburn pursue and defeat the Black Knight with the power of the three sacred swords.

Sonic and the Knights of the Round Table are forced to flee, with Gawain preparing to give up. However, Sonic asks Gawain what he said before - isn't there more to being a knight than just serving a king? Nimue arrives, and with her help, Sonic and the Knights set off to use the sacred swords to defeat Merlina by putting up a barrier around the kingdom, which is then revealed that is too weak. After the four swords form a barrier around the castle, Sonic confronts Merlina, who explains that she knows the kingdom will soon come to an end and wants to make it last forever.

Afterwards, Percival congratulates Sonic, who responds that he couldn't have done it with out the help of her and the other knights. Lancelot says that the Knights of the Round Table will have to disband now that King Arthur is gone, but Caliburn reminds them that he is the one who chooses the one to be king; thus, Sonic is the true King Arthur. After the credits roll, Sonic, who has been taken back to his world, explains his journey to Amy Rose. She - having jumped to conclusions - then complains that he is lying and forgot about their date, then proceeds to attack him with her Piko Piko Hammer. The game then shows a book, titled King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, change its title to Sonic and the Black Knight, the same process in the previous game, Sonic and the Secret Rings.

The stages feature townspeople that the player can choose to help or injure; these actions and the player's deeds will be judged at the end of each stage, updating the player's "Knight's Honor Bonus". Helping the townspeople will boost this bonus, while hurting them will make it drop.[7] At the end of each stage, the player's actions will determine their morality on their player card, with white and gold symbols giving a large multiplier allowing for faster growth, and red and black symbols causing less than normal growth. The more gold symbols the player has on their card, the less quick time inputs are required to donate to townsfolk, going so far to skip the quick time micro game altogether if you are seen as chilverious enough via Crest of the King.[8] By helping out grateful citizens, players will be able to purchase new items from them, acquiring items such as gauntlets, magical tomes, and new swords. There are 247 items in the game, some of which can be gained by opening treasure chests in the Missions. An online mode allows treasures to be traded. Additionally, the player can collect townspeople by completing Missions, which will increase the player's title, thereby unlocking additional Skills, better items and more support from the townspeople.

Some character themes from Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 are featured in the game as well. Other themes are unlockable by equipping medallions of any surrogate knight, leading to songs such as Blaze's theme "Vela Nova" being heard during gameplay.

This game has a fake-out credits scene once Sonic defeats the black knight for the final time and cuts back to the title screen. However, the credits never get interupted or anything ala Kid Icarus Uprising, it just cuts back to the title screen. You don't actually find out there is more to the game unless you bother to boot up the save file again. It's a really odd design choice, and I fear that Arin and Danny might end the series when they see the credits and not actually play the second half of the game, which is actually the better half of the game. Considering that they never read the YouTube comments, rarely come on reddit, and get flooded on Twitter to the point of not being able to read all responses, does anyone have any way to inform them of this? I'd like to see their reactions to the game's major "plot twist," especially considering a certain comment Danny made during the first cutscene.

That and Sonic CD are the only main series Sonic games I haven't played. I've heard pretty mixed opinions on this though. So gimme your own little reviews of it, ideally without spoiling any story. As the only thing I know about it is the final boss, Shadow wears a knight outfit and Sonic at one point puts his arm around the Amy lookalike, which probably gave the Sonamy community a seizure.

I also began to notice an odd trend during the cutscenes before the bosses that Sonic wasn't quipping as much as he should; he should be spending at least a solid 30 seconds making jokes about the boss and not taking it seriously. That's also something they got wrong about Sonic in this game. Sonic doesn't constantly say jokes, he's taking everything rather seriously and it's very evident from the writing that this wasn't written by the masters that are Pontac and Graff; writers who did an immense amount of research into the sonic lore and wrote two of the best Sonic stories which are Sonic Generations and Sonic Colors respectively.

But I think the biggest mistake they made in this game with it's writing is towards the very end of the game where they commit the biggest crime of defacing Sonic's personality. They made him give a good life lesson; the REAL sonic would never act like this, he would probably shrug it off and ask where to find Baldy McNoseHair and then walk off laughing.

The game Sonic and the Black knight has Sonic being summoned the the story of King Arthur by the wizard Merlina. He is tasked by her to defeat King Arthur who has gone mad due to the power of Excalibur's scabbard. Even though one can assume that King Arthur is the titular Black Knight, the game never refers to him as such, nor is the moniker Black Knight said anywhere in the game. This leads into my theory that the Black knight isn't King Arthur...but Sonic himself.

Firstly, let's discuss Sonic's role in this story. Sonic has to kill King Arthur in order to stop his reign of terror. Merlina points out that by doing this, Sonic will be considered a slayer of kings, the worst of all knights. Sonic is okay with this, stating "Guess I can't be the hero every time." This also plays a roll at the endgame. So it turns out the King Arthur Sonic killed is actually a manifestation created by Merlin. The real King Arthur either never existed or has long sense died. At one point, Merlin and Merlina became aware that they're world would end around the same time that King Arthur died(as the tales of King Arthur end in tragedy). Merlin attempted to circumvent this by creating a King Arthur of his own. Merlina has a different approach. She uses the scabbard(which grants immortality to the wielder) to attempt and make their world immortal by fusing it with the underworld. Sonic opposes Merlina, saying "what good is a world that goes on forever?"After getting decimated by Merlina for a bit, the power of the four sacred swords transforms Caliburn into Excalibur, and Sonic into Excalibur Sonic. During the boss fight, Merlina states that what Sonic is doing will eventually doom her world and argues that he is the evil one in this situation; Sonic repeats his adage from earlier that he doesn't mind being the "bad guy".Sonic defeats Merlina and explains his idealogy about accepting that all things will end, and living your lives to the fullest. Lastly, Caliburn states that by pulling him out of the stone(yeah Caliburn is a talking sword in this game), Sonic is the true King Arthur.
