session not passed back from template

I have a PHP file that forms a session, then renders the smarty template.  When the user submits, the php file is called again but the session is gone.  I'm using 3.1.8.  Is this a smarty thing?  Can I work around it?

This is not a Smarty problem.

Did you call session_start(); in your php file before any output?
