Title : Introduction to Quantum Computing

Speaker : Francesco Versaci

Date : MAY 08, 2006

Venue & Time : Aula Alfa, 113 Via Salaria; 03:00PM

Abstract : Quantum computing tries and build more powerful
computers using quantum mechanics properties. In
this talk we will give a practical introduction to
this new emerging field. In the first part a resume
of quantum mechanics is presented, with an analysys
of Stern-Gerlach experiment and the presentation of
the four axioms using Dirac notation, with an
unformal recap of the mathematical concepts
used. Then quantum computing is introduced,
highlighting the quantum phenomena that make it
possible (superposition and entanglement) and
showing the main quantum gates used in quantum
circuits. With these tools the no-cloning theorem,
Deutsch algorithm and quantum key distribution will
be seen in detail in the second part.

At the end of the talk some open problems will be
presented.

The fish trap exists because of the fish. Once you've gotten the
fish you can forget the trap. The rabbit snare exists because of
the rabbit. Once you've gotten the rabbit, you can forget the
snare. Words exist because of meaning. Once you've gotten the
meaning, you can forget the words. Where can I find a man who has
forgotten words so I can talk with him? -- Chuang-tzu
